Home Gym Renovation Update: Drywall, Flooring, & Paint

We’re moving right along with the home gym renovation. Today, I’ve got some big updates for you… and a look behind-the-scenes. We’ve tackled drywall, flooring, are in the midst of planning, and I even started painting- although that step didn’t quite go as expected. Click through for the full remodeling update!

If you missed this, our current renovation project is our home gym. We thought it would be a quick and easy space to remodel, and we’re hoping it gives us a little motivation to get in better shape this year. No excuses after this! If you missed my latest update, check it out here… Home Gym Renovation: Before Images & Demo. Scroll through that tour to see where we started and my overall vision or design plan for this room. Here’s how it’s looking today…

Drywall Patching and Electrical

Emmett spent a ton of time patching drywall. We needed to update our recessed lighting, run electrical to the built-in closet (for a sconce & in-cabinet power), and rework the switch plates & outlets. That has taken the most time.

Installing Flooring

Next, he jumped right into flooring. We’re installing the same Stuga material we have throughout the rest of our basement. Check out this post for a closer look… how to install hardware flooring in a basement. It’s a specific wood flooring approved for basements. Once it was installed, we covered it to keep it protected for the duration of the renovation.

Planning and Our Built-In Cabinets

While he was busy with that, I was wrapped up in design & ordering. I ordered a new door for the room. It will match the others throughout our house- as well as my beloved brass door hardware. You can check out the door style here: how to order & replace an interior door.

Our nero marble tile arrived (pictured above) and I took some time to update a few gym accessories I’ve had my eye on. They sort of shaped the color palette for this room.

Most exciting was finalizing our walnut built-in and seeing the beginning stages come to life. Here’s a peek at my rendering and a look at the process. They’re being professionally made at Emmett’s work… perks of being employed at a cabinet shop!

I’m in the process of looking at stain colors, that way we’ll be set once they’re ready for finishing. It should look something like this, once it’s installed…

Paint & Wallpaper

The wallpaper also arrived and it’s fabulous, if I do say so myself! It’s exactly what I had in mind and the scale is really fun. I took it to my local Sherwin-Williams to have it color matched for our ceiling and wall paint (the window wall isn’t getting wallpaper since it will have curtains), but the I don’t think it’s a good color match. It’s back to the drawing board on the paint. I’d like to get it as close as possible, and I’m convinced it needs to be a touch darker. Emmett thinks I’m being a little insane, but those details will bother me (I know myself)– so I’m fixing it.

FAQ

Could you link your tutorial on swapping the brass door hardware again? I love your interior doors!

Of course, and thank you! You can find it here: how to measure, select, and install interior door hardware (a step-by-step guide).

What does the closet or built-in area currently look like?

I’ll drop an image below! It’s patched, electrical has been ran, flooring is installed, and we’re just awaiting the custom cabinets. We’ll install those, tile the backsplash, install a sconce, and trim it out for a custom look.

  1. Happy pizza Friday, and happy belated birthday to Emmett! This renovation is moving fast and furious, and it’s looking incredible. The wallpaper is the star of the show at the moment, and goodness I can’t wait to see the built-in all finished. What a bummer about the color match- I can see what you mean in the last image. I’ll start by saying, it doesn’t look terrible- just slightly more muted than the wallpaper. I know you, and I know it’s going to bother you to no end. Is it possible to take the paint you’ve already purchased and have them saturate the color more? Or do you have to purchase new paint? I feel your pain on this one, Sarah! Camping sounds like a great way to take a step back, re-evaluate, and come back with a game plan. I hope you both have an incredible time! Xoxo

He says thank you! It’s moving right along in the home gym. I’m excited! The walls will require multiple coats of paint anyway, since it’s so dark… so I’m think we’ll finish this gallon, then grab another that is a better color for the top coverage. Hopefully that works out! We’re excited to unplug this weekend for Emmett’s birthday. I hope you guys have a fun weekend, too! xo

  2. Good morning! Yay for an exciting reno update! You guys are moving right along. The built-in area is going to be GORgeous! Love, love, love the rich walnut and Nero marble. And the wallpaper is absolutely bananas! The detail and scale? Dead. (This alone puts my excitement level off the charts for the Tuesday Made reboot.) Bummer about the paint match, but I’m sure it can be adjusted to your satisfaction. Of course you found beautiful gym equipment too. Ha. I would definitely be inspired to hang out in this room, but I might feel guilty sweating all over the lovely surfaces. Sure to be the swankiest gym in town! I hope you two enjoy a fab weekend celebrating and relaxing! Happiest of birthdays to Emmett!🎉💜 Cheers to Pizza Friday, friends!

Good morning, Peggi! I’m definitely excited for the built-in. I think it’s going to be really pretty and functional. Isn’t the wallpaper fun?! I’m really happy with it. We’re looking forward to a weekend in the desert, unplugged. I hope you also have a good one!

  3. For being “just an update,” that’s a link heavy post and now all of a sudden I have so much more reading to do! I hope you can find the *just right* paint color. Did they color match to one of their colors or did you get a complete custom color? Sometimes I like it when they match to their color to you know what you are getting. One time when I did a color match like that, the guy gave me the whole run down of how many percentage points off each next best color was – it was wild to me!

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Ha! I love to hear that, Julie. Thank you! I took the wallpaper in and had them color match it… but it was way off. To correct it, I ended up choosing a swatch that was most similar, which feels much better.
