We renovated our kitchen in 2019. If you’d like to see the crazy before images, sources, and the entire process, definitely check out that link! It’s one of my favorite renovations and a room I still adore- even five years later. Since the renovation, not much as changed… we did update the kitchen shelving, swap out our gas range (we removed the GE Cafe Range for the Big Chill Classic Range), and we added a water filtration system. Those three changes really improved the space, but there was one item I’d yet to cross off the completion list… finding a slender kitchen island. For years, I relied on my budget kitchen cart, but knew it was never meant to be a long term solution. I was excited to find this island from Lowe’s, and was eager to give it a mini makeover to match our kitchen! Scroll to see it…

Kitchen Island Makeover

The island itself is well made, has a beautiful shape, and is really functional with tons of organized closed storage. I just wanted the cabinet to feel more cohesive with our kitchen, as the color didn’t work very well with our existing cabinetry color. We gave it a fresh coat of paint- to match the floating shelves above our coffee bar, which is a gray hue pulled from our backsplash tile. I debated changing the hardware, but ended up really liking the existing matte black pulls and knobs. The biggest update was swapping the wood top for a heavy slab of marble. It was in the remnant trash pile at the slab yard, so it was a very budget friendly project.

Before & After

Here’s a little behind-the scenes look at the process… Emmett sprayed it at his work (so much easier and less mess in a paint booth).

Quick & Functional Kitchen Island Styling Ideas

I started migrating some things from our main cabinets to the island… oversized serving boards, seasonal serveware, rolling pins, cookbooks, recipes we’d like to easily access (perfect for the drawers), etc. I’m sure I’ll enjoy restyling this piece often. For now, I kept it simple with a magnolia branch arrangement and a seasonal candle for fall. Here are some more styling ideas, no matter the size of your kitchen island…

  • Use it to hold occasional glassware or serveware
  • Style your cookbooks or baking tools (like rolling pins) for easy access
  • Keep your cutting boards easily accessible while adding warmth to your kitchen
  • Hang your linen kitchen towels from it
  • Style oversized bowls for fruits & veggies
  • Use it as a surface to style fresh florals or branches for the season
  • Keep your favorite seasonal candle on top for a calming moment

Of course I wanted to share my top picks with you! Having had both a kitchen cart and an island, both have their advantages. I will say- we may add hidden wheels to this someday because having a mobile island was the most convenient… especially since I photograph our kitchen so often. It’s also easier to clean, can quickly be pushed out of the way for entertaining, and can be used in multiple spaces. Just something to think about! Lowe’s has a lot of great options- for islands and carts. Definitely keep them in mind for your upcoming interior and kitchen projects… our entire kitchen came from Lowe’s (even the cabinetry)!

FAQ

Do you have recommendations for a pretty kitchen towel to hang from an island hook?

I do! Be sure to check out our kitchen linens in the Tuesday Made shop. You can also hop over to this blog post- Classic Kitchen Linens to Love!

Would you ever use one of these in another room, aside from the kitchen?

These would also be great for serving, outdoor (covered) areas, as an additional work surface in a home office or studio, for use as a home bar, in a butler’s pantry, folding table in a laundry room, or a makeshift kitchen- in a basement, perhaps? I enjoy thinking outside the box for things like this!

I want to swap the hardware on my existing island, filling the nail holes, and changing the placement… it just feels off. Can you share where knobs should be installed in relation to the cabinet door?

Check out this post on Cabinetry Hardware Placement Guide (with easy examples). I think those visuals will be super helpful for you!

What candle are you burning?

It’s this one– my favorite for fall! The weather cooled off and I jumped right into cozy season.

  1. Good morning! I feel like this deserves a little confetti-throwing, trumpet fanfare moment!🎉 Such a fantastic addition to an already enviable space. So many details to love. The color allows even a substantial piece to bring a beautiful brightness to the moody teal ocean. My initial ambivalence about the hardware turned to “Oh, pretty!” A subtle colonial nod. I especially adore that the door and drawer fronts are complimentary, not copies. Another intentional inclusion of contrast. And to top it all off 😉, a gorgeous hunk o’ marble. Chef’s kiss, for sure! I am glad that your patience was finally rewarded! Just in time for all the fall baking (ahem, after your recovery). Sadly, my galley kitchen won’t accommodate an island, but I certainly spy numerous potential picks in your collage. Your customization ideas definitely get the wheels turning too! (Speaking of, casters are a must for me.) I’m eager for the remnant shopping tips, so I’ll keep my eyes peeled for that one. For now, I’m going to go recharge under the full moon. I hope you’re enjoying New York!💜🥰🌕

Thank you, thank you! We’re definitely excited about the island. I thought about swapping the hardware, and thought the same- what a simple colonial style… it works, so I decided to leave it. Can you believe that beautiful hunk of marble was destined for the dumpster? Gasp! I’m so glad we were able to grab it. I feel like it was meant to be. Thanks for your kind words! I’ve already filled it with all of my baking items and serving boards.

  2. Oh yay! It looks so nice! Casters sound like a great idea for your uses and needs =)

And I’m excited for a remnants post! Would you mind including some prices if you have them? I’m always told it’s so much cheaper, but I’ve never bought stone, so not sure what budget actually looks like. We actually just replaced our kitchen countertops with plywood and did an epoxy pour, so they look like soapstone! For less than 1k!

  3. Good morning Sarah! The new island works so well in the kitchen- and I love that you painted it to match the shelving. It offers such a light and bright moment. I’m surprised by the route you chose, considering you were looking for something with more open storage for the longest. How awesome that you have even more functionality with the closed storage though- I love the cutting board organizer. Did it come stock, or was that a feature you added? Every element of this island seems like it was made for your space, and swapping the wood top for a marble remnant was a genius move. Lowe’s has such an extensive supply of high quality items- I love just going in and browsing their selections. Their online offerings cover even more options- I’m loving the slender open framed island with the X back support. Your ability to see the potential in an item, and make a slight change or tweak to suit your desired function or aesthetic is next level. I hope the new kitchen addition serves you well, and makes you as happy with your kitchen as the day it was installed. Have a great day friend!

Hi Lauren! Thank you! I’m really pleased with it. I’ve already moved all of our bakeware, baking items, cutting & serving boards, and other things to fill it… which was able to create an entire section of cabinets dedicated to pantry & food. Our kitchen definitely has felt more functional. The organizers came stock with the island (pleasant surprise). I also liked the island with the X support- so pretty! Hope you’re also having a pretty autumn day! xo

  4. Good Morning!
I hope you are having the best time Sarah! I was so excited to receive your newsletter yesterday, catch a glimpse of your new island and got totally pumped for todays post 😜 It’s gorgeous looks perfect in your kitchen and my gosh tons of storage. Bonus! So wonderful Emmett was able to give it a professional spray at his workplace, so handy!! And the remnant slab you found is stunning, can’t wait to hear more about it. And the hardware it came with is really pretty and it all fits in so seamlessly. Lowe’s is a fabulous hardware store. When you were renovating your kitchen through Lowe’s we were in the process of adding a guest and powder bathroom as well as a doggie shower and because of you I checked them out. I think I mentioned before we purchased lots of materials for these projects. All the tile, sink vanity and faucets were purchased there. I was so surprised to find such nice stuff and the selection in Canada at that time wasn’t nearly as large as the US but I still founds some great materials there. Unfortunately, all the Lowe’s stores are gone now ☹️ as they were bought out. But I highly recommend them too for any bathroom or kitchen renovation projects.
Anyway love love the island! So beautiful 😍
Enjoy the rest of your travels! And cheers to the latest addition to your stunning kitchen 🥂

Hi Colleen! I had such a wonderful trip. I’m glad I was able to get away before my surgery. Thanks for reading my newsletters- those have been so fun! I’m actually working on tomorrow’s right now. We really do love Lowe’s. It’s convenient for us (about a 5 minute drive from our house), and of course they carry plenty of choices online. I’m glad you have been able to source from them in Canada as well. I’m sad to hear they were bought out in CA. I’m glad they worked well for your bathroom and kitchen renovations (both are beautiful!!). Hope you’re having such a good fall season. I’m playing catch up over here as my body is healing. I’m finally able to sit at my desk for a good amount of time :)

  5. I love what you landed on, and the paint color is such a good fit. This post is so timely for me as my partner and I are moving into a new home (well, new to us – it’s old!) and will need an island for our kitchen – I think a cart will be perfect! There are quite a few you shared that I think would work great. I’m thinking I want primarily closed storage so I can store a lot without it looking pretty!

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Thank you so much, Brittany! Congratulations on moving into your new (old) home!! That is so exciting. The closed storage has definitely been nice to tuck away non aesthetically pleasing items. I hope you’re settling in nicely!

  6. I love these creative solutions! We have a similar sized island in our kitchen. My husband made it from a leftover piece of butcher block, purchased some fluted legs, and created a structure that people think we purchased from an expensive store. Ours is open underneath, but I love all the extra storage you have in yours!

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Thanks so much, Julie! Your island sounds beautiful!
