Sconces

High / Low Brass Sconce

The brass sconces in my living room were reasonably priced to begin with, but I found an even more affordable option. Both have candelabra clip-on shades, so you could easily switch the look seasonally.

Sconces are one of the most versatile fixtures… you can find one in nearly every room in our home. Flanking the bedside, in the kitchen, living room, entryway, hall, etc. They’re the easiest fixture for layering into a lighting design plan. If you feel a room could use a bit more light or warmth, try adding a sconce.

Chandeliers

High / Low Traditional Chandelier

I splurged for my Windsor chandelier. It’s whimsical, has the perfect white plaster finish, and the price reflects the excellent quality. I found an incredible budget version (sans shades), but you could easily add your candelabra shades- which makes it nearly identical to my designer version.

Check out this lighting post on how to choose a clip on sconce or chandelier shade! You can really transform the aesthetic of a fixture with this simple designer hack.

Picture Lights

High / Low Antique Brass Picture Light

The daybed in my home office is such a cozy spot to lounge. I knew I wanted to install a vintage oil painting and illuminated the nook with an extra long 24″ picture light.

The easiest way to elevate a work of art is by installing a picture light. This easy designer trick instantly makes a vignette feel warm, interesting, and gallery-worthy. I also do this to help balance a vignette, while adding emphasis to my favorite pieces of art.

Flush Mounts

High / Low Polished Nickel Flush Mount

This Visual Comfort flush mount is a designer staple. It’s one I’ve installed many times (in my home and client homes), but this is a great budget alternative- these both come in multiple finishes!

Flush mounts are ideal for lining hallways, basements, and utilitarian spaces, like a mudroom or laundry room. They’re ideal for smaller rooms with shorter ceilings, and when I’m choosing a flush mount- I like to keep it simple, with clean lines.

Pendants

High / Low Bronze Sphere Pendant

This sphere pendant is another fixture I splurged on for our dining room, but I found a beautiful lower priced option that evokes the same mood with an identical shape and bronze finish. Elegant, right?

Much like sconces, pendants are another versatile fixture that can be installed in nearly every room… the kitchen, the bath, an entry, the dining room, a hall, living space, etc. My biggest pendant tip? Install them in multiples for a bigger impact… two or three above a kitchen island, a few down a hallway, or matching pendants balancing a double sink vanity.

Lamps

High / Low Crystal Table Lamp

These lamps are exactly the same size, have a very similar shade shape, and both have a heavy crystal base. I love a smaller lamp for the kitchen counter or island.

Crystal table lamps are among my personal favorite fixtures- I think they have a such a timeless appeal. Check out this post for my ideas for styling crystal table lamps… they float all over my house.

Semi Flush Mount

High / Low Semi Flush Mount

When renovating our basement bar, I knew I needed a low profile light fixture, that also felt interesting to illuminate the sink. I landed on a classic polished nickel semi flush mount with beautiful milk glass.

When compiling a lighting plan, I use semi flush mounts in the same way as a standard flush mount… in smaller rooms, utilitarian spaces, or rooms with lower ceilings- like my basement, pictured above.

Am I crazy, or did you have a different white chandelier in your entryway for a while?

Good eye! Check out this post for the backstory… swapping our entryway chandelier.

Can you share a handful of budget fixtures you’d select (as a designer) under $300?

Of course. I actually already compiled my favorites under $200… keep scrolling- they’re just below!

Any recommendations for affordable black or bronze bedside sconces?

Check out these! The hinge arm is a nice design detail, they have a soft shade for diffusing the light (a bedside must), they’re adjustable, can be either plug-in or hardwired, they’re less than $100 for the pair… and they can be put on a dimmer.

  1. Lighting in a room is everything- and when it comes to fixtures, nothing gets me more excited than a beautiful shape and finish. Good morning Sarah! Light fixtures are like earrings for the home; some dangle, some hug, and I love them all. LOL. I’ll admit, in our early years of renovating, we didn’t put much thought into our light fixtures, or a well designed lighting plan for that matter. Sure they looked nice, but as our budget and taste have evolved, so too have our choices. Lately I’m diving into light fixtures more than I ever have. I’m not sure if that’s born out of a terrible lighting design in this home, or just knowledge gained over the years of renovating and following here on the blog. Either way, I find myself having definitive preferences and style, where once it was mostly about filling a hole for functionality. I still adore a budget look for less. The fixtures you’ve rounded up here have stunners in every category. The picture lights are my favorites, but I also love the black chandelier, the polished nickel double sconce, the two flush mounts, and the black single sconce. I’m curious: have you ever ordered a budget fixture you ended up being unhappy with? What was it that made you unhappy with it? Also, have you ever had a budget fixture wear terribly in terms of finish? It’s not lost on me the time, effort and energy it takes to comb through hundreds of options to find the diamond in the rough- thank you for sharing such a wonderful list! Cheers to hump day!

It really is! Light fixtures are something I could scroll and admire all day- it’s one of my favorite components of designing a room. You know I also adore a pretty picture light! I’d say one of the budget fixtures I’ve ordered are the sconces in our maroon guest room… they work well, they shape is super nice, I like the finish I put on them, but they feel pretty lightweight (inexpensive). For now, they’re totally fine… but if I ever see a sale for something similar- I may grab replacements. TBD! Isn’t it weird how weight can make something feel lower quality? I haven’t had any issues with finishes and budget fixtures though. Awesome questions!! Hope you’re having a great week- we’re off to Powell! xo

  2. Good morning! I pinned this post even before I finished reading. Not certain if I can entirely (blame) credit you with my lamp obsession, but I do know where I can always find a good lighting discussion! As usual, your hi/low picks astound. As does your ability to mine the gems from the *vast* Wayfair selection! When I am finally ready to commit to placement, I will have a tough time choosing from all the sconces! So many! Sadly, our ceiling heights don’t allow chandeliers or large pendants, but you’ve certainly collected plenty of beautiful alternatives. Flushmounts aren’t typically exciting, but I have always loved the star-shaped ones. The Everly Quinn Jireh is so pretty and an impressive size. Tons of great semi-flush options too! I’m especially into the McCormick and the Hinkley Chance. I am officially prohibited from discussing lamps. 🤣Must not look. I’ve no doubt you found winners in every category. Thanks for such a comprehensive roundup from a super-convenient source. I hope your patio tiling is going swiftly and smoothly! Will keep my eyes peeled for IG updates. Cheers to a lovely Wednesday, Sarah!💜

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Love to hear that, Peggi! I know we’re kindred spirits when it comes to lamp collecting (hoarding, lol). We’re hoping to start patio tile next week! We’ve had a fun trip planned with friends this weekend, so we’re excited for an outdoorsy weekend away. As soon as we’re back… it’s game on with the tile though. Can’t wait to share! Hope you’re also having a good week. xo

  3. Sarah, I love you for this. I don’t love the exchange rate as a Canadian, but that’s not your fault haha!

With our (ongoing) kitchen renovation, I’ve got the itch to update a bunch of things in the rest of the house, but obviously, with such a major reno, the budget is stretched. Like Lauren, we didn’t put much thought into our lights in the early years and now that we *do* have some nicer ones… everything else pales in comparison.

This is EXACTLY what I needed and I am looking forward to (impulse?) buying a few of these! Surprise my husband with a few more things to add to his to-do list hehe.

I hope you’re well, and thank you for always providing a great range of beautiful options in all of your shopping posts!

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

I’m so glad to hear that, Carly! I wish I could help the exchange rate for you, ha. Major renovations definitely are tough on the budget. I can relate. Once you invest in a quality fixture, it’s definitely tricky to find ones of lesser value that compare to those hand crafted ones. Hopefully you can snag a couple of these when the time comes. I also “surprise my husband” with home finds, haha! Hope you have a lovely weekend ahead!
