10 Tulip Styling Ideas & Arrangements for Spring

This weather has me craving spring… although, I know it’s too soon and more snow will fall. One of my favorite flowers to display during the spring & summer months are tulips. They’re textural, sculptural, are easy to style, and look good in any vessel. With spring on the horizon, I found myself perusing the floral section while grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s earlier this week. With this unseasonably warm weather, I felt inspired to get creative with some floral styling. Click through for some fun ideas on where you could style tulips- or any florals for that matter. These ideas are perfect for adding a splash of color, greenery, or texture…

Almost a decade ago, I shared a tutorial on how to create a Trader Joe’s floral arrangement, and not much has changed. Almost every grocery trip results in at least one small bundle of flowers. It’s amazing how a simple ritual can result in bringing joy to your week. I hope this post brightens your day or inspires you to grab some blooms or a plant the next time you visit your local grocery. Here are some quick styling ideas…

1. On a Desk

I spend a lot of time in my home office, and more often than not- any fresh flowers that result from grocery shopping end up in here. Don’t forget to style florals where you’re most likely to enjoy them… for me, that’s my desk.

2. In the Bath or Powder Room

Bud vases are the easiest way to style florals because they require minimal effort. Snip some stems and drop them into water… that’s the extent of it. I especially love a few bloom in a small bud vase, brightening the bathroom, powder room, or a vanity table. Speaking of, check out this post on our burl bathroom vanity table DIY.

3. On the Mantel

My fireplace mantel is always the vignette I begin styling first for the changing of seasons. I think tulips look lovely styled in a planter, but don’t worry- you don’t actually have to plant them. I filled a small clear vase with water and nested it within one of my favorite planters for spring. Check out this post for more mantel styling tips.

4. In a Pitcher

No readily available vases or planters? No problem… grab a pitcher from the kitchen. I’m serious. I love the rustic and casual touch it adds. It’s great for styling on the countertop or at the coffee bar.

5. On a Side Table or Pedestal

Tulips are amazing for creating sculptural arrangements that have a textural form with lots of movement. Sometimes it’s most beautiful to allow them to stand on their own. Style a single vase or planter filled with tulips alone on a side table- or better yet, a pedestal. Check out this post on how to build a decorative pedestal (and to see an example)!

6. Fill Negative Space on a Stair Landing

Have negative space on a stair landing, hall, or foyer? It’s no secret, one of my favorite designer tricks is to use a demilune to fill dead space (here are 15 black demilune tables for any budget). This is the perfect area to insert florals for a splash of seasonal color.

7. Plant Tulips In a Bowl

While you could easily use my “vase nested into a planter” hack, you can also plant tulips in any vessel of your choosing. I love an oversized bowl for plants and floral arrangements, alike. It always achieves a timeless look.

8. On a Bedside Table or Nightstand

If you caught my Quince linen bedding review, you already know I’ve swapped our bedding for spring. Again, I have to emphasize- I’m feeling reading for the warmer months ahead. With our newly upgraded bedding, I thought I’d give the bedside tables a bit of attention with fresh florals. Aside from my desk, that’s my second favorite place to style blooms.

9. On the Kitchen Island

It’s nice having a larger kitchen island. We previously had a small cart, and now I have a more substantial surface for styling. This has been the perfect place to style larger arrangements that visually balance the weight of our darker kitchen. Did you catch my post on ideas for customizing a kitchen island or cart?

10. Brighten a Corner

My last piece of advice is to brighten an ordinary corner with your favorite florals. This corner in our formal living room has become my go-to spot for burning seasonal fragrances and displaying florals. It has really become a vignette I look forward to styling.

FAQ

Do you actually have ALL of these tulips scattered throughout your house at the moment?

Ha, no! I’ve got two tulip arrangements right now… one on my desk, and one on my nightstand. I just gathered up images from the past to give you a visual for each example. I always think those are helpful (at least for me)!

What color tulips do you gravitate toward?

Usually white, green, yellow, or lavender. It really depends on what I can find at the grocery.

  1. Good morning! Yes to tulips and all things spring (except maybe the mud). We are on day two (of 3🤞) with bright sunshine and 50 degrees. I may not lose my 💩, after all. Kind of kidding. Unlike your area, I don’t expect we’ll get more snow, but it might cool back down briefly. We’re so close though, and fresh flowers feel like just the thing to keep us going. I love tulips! They’re sculptural and dramatic at every stage. I enjoy the pinks, purples and peach tones. I, hilariously, have 3 random driveway tulips that I eagerly anticipate every year. They’re a gorgeous lavender with frilly petals.😍 I’m a fan of filling tiny vases with foraged florals and sprinkling them around. On the nightstand, the kitchen counter, the coffee table. What space doesn’t benefit? I’m anxious to hear specifics about all of your exciting projects. I’m still in the overthinking phase of my kitchen update. 🤣 Plus, I’m going to AZ for a week in March AND a week in April. Who am I? Anyway, three short weeks until the equinox! Let’s do this!💜

Same here… it’s another beautiful sunny day! We’re so close. Tulips are my favorite this time of year. I loved reading about your random driveway tulips- it’s always a fun surprise when a flower pokes through in an unexpected place. They sound beautiful! I’m definitely excited to knock out some projects here at home. David & Stephen hooked me up with their skylight installer, so they’re coming today to see if it’s feasible for our bathroom. I’m not convinced (since we have an attic), but fingers crossed… extra natural light would be a welcomed addition! All of that to say, I’m in the boring, planning stages and Emmett has been in dusty demo mode. Good things to come though! I love that you’re headed to AZ twice! Have the best time. I talked to with Laurie Anne on the phone yesterday and it was 90 degrees there! Enjoy that sunshine.

  2. I just love the floral arrangements you put together! You have me craving a Trader Joe’s visit (why are their florals the best?). Tulips are one of my favorite spring florals- especially if they’re white or pink. You’ve given me so many ideas in this post. If I can brave the crazy drivers at my nearest location, I may just grab some for a pick-me-up. Hopefully soon, we’ll have a TJ’s here in town… according to word on the street. Lol. At any rate, this post has fully ushered spring in my mind! Ha!

Thanks, Lauren! They really do have the best selection with unbeatable prices. You should definitely make a grocery run! Fingers crossed word on the street is accurate and you’ll have a closer location soon! Ha. Have an amazing weekend ahead!

  3. I was at trader joes the other day to find a women creating her epic arrangement right on the hood of her car – yay, for TJ flowers! Tulips and bulbs are the best part of the spring. In our corner of washington state, visitors travel from all over to see our fields of tulips in vibrant colors, it’s the prettiest most springy thing!

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

They have the best flowers… and so affordable! It sounds like I need to come visit Washington this spring- sounds stunning this time of year!
