Home Tour : Mill Road by W Design Collective

Hi friends! I hope you had a wonderful weekend. We took the camper out for a fun weekend away, as we’re trying to savor this last bit of summer. Last week (with some serious mercury retrograde vibes), I took an unintentional blog break to update my site & homepage after some tech issues. Today, I’ve got a stunning home tour lined up for you! This home is the perfect end of summer scroll, as we are beginning to think forward to transitioning our homes for fall. With classic finishes and a timeless color palette (including dark cabinetry), this is one you’ll want to save for future inspiration. Click through to tour Mill Road by the talented team at W Design Collective…

It has been ages since I’ve shared a home tour, which happened to be one of my favorite series here on the blog. Something I neglected to share earlier in the year… I was sued for image use from one of my posts highlighting a designer (even though credit was appropriately linked). Given the lawsuit and major hit to my bank account, as a small business owner, I’ve opted to discontinue series like 10 Pins, Design Eye Training, and potentially Home Tours. While I can’t promise to bring this series back on a regular basis, I am thrilled to share this stunning home by my local design friends over at W Design Collective. They’re incredibly talented, and of course- have given me permission to share this tour with you today. Scroll on for interior inspiration and be sure to follow them on Instagram… along with Lauren Wilcox who beautifully photographed this home.

Entry

The entryway features tonal paneling, a modern meets traditional staircase (no easy feat to achieve that effortless & timeless aesthetic), vintage art, and a beautiful striped upholstered bench… which I imagine makes the perfect place to drop your bag or tie your shoes.

Mudroom

I’m probably most smitten with the moody dark green cabinetry in the mudroom. If you missed last week’s post, check out my top paint color picks for dark kitchen cabinets. It’s a must-save if you’re on the hunt for bold cabinetry swatches. Paired alongside a tongue and groove wall treatment, the simplicity of the millwork and soapstone countertops really makes this space feel classic. I also love the slate or bluestone flooring- optimal for a mudroom! This palette certainly has me craving fall. I’m predicting we’ll see a lot of green in the season ahead.

Kitchen

You know I appreciate timeless wood cabinetry, and these walnut cabinets are no exception. The curved end of the custom island makes the perfect styling focal point, and the brass hardware really complements the bronze light fixtures throughout the space. This is another perfect example of how layering and mixing metals in a kitchen achieves a designerly look. I definitely appreciate the amount of open and closed storage throughout this space.

Breakfast Nook & Pantry

The breakfast nook and pantry are just off the kitchen and the large scale of the pleated pendant above the dining table really makes this vignette feel special. However, the W Design team said this space isn’t totally finished… the window treatments didn’t arrive in time for photos, but they’ll be adding cafe curtains to soften this space.

Parlor

Home Tour : Mill Road by W Design Collective - roomfortuesday.com

They call this room the “Formal Parlor”, which doubles as a living space with adequate seating, as well as a makeshift office or workspace. This room is just off the entry, and I adore the furniture selection, marble fireplace, lighting, and thoughtful styling. Very well done!

Homework & Playroom

W Design Collective’s client for this home happens to homeschool their children, so the addition of this room makes total sense for functionality. They added plenty of storage behind beautiful two toned cabinetry (something I also did in my basement kitchen), a built-in bench seat, paired alongside a vintage dining table… which makes the perfect workspace for schooling & crafting.

Bathroom

The primary bathroom is one of my favorite rooms in this home. It’s soft, inviting, and has a very calming appeal. That curvy bathtub is what dreams are made of! I’d choose the same one for my own home. From the soaking tub to the arched shower, and the double vanity- this space is as functional as it is beautiful. You can tell so much thought and care went into planning and designing this room. Every detail is perfection and the materials work nicely together to create a cohesive space.

Laundry

The laundry room in this home definitely has a historic appeal. Did you notice the double faucets? One is for cold water and one dispenses hot water. Paired with marble countertops and an updated subway tile pattern, this neutral room is filled with timeless inspiration. If you’re also looking to install budget friendly subway tile… check out this post on how to make subway tile look classic, not basic.

How did you discover W Design Collective?

They’re actually local to Salt Lake City (where I live), and I’ve shared their work in the past. They just finished a beautiful new office space nearby!

Can we see more of this home?

Luckily, W Design Collective just shared part two on their Substack. You can find it here! The second portfolio feature includes a charming boys bath, pictured below… it’s one you’ll want to see.

  1. Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear you had a law suit 🙈🙈🙈🙈. That’s awful. I always thought you did things so professionally, and gave credit in a great way, I’m surprised you still had an issue. I’m so sorry you had to deal with that, and I hope it never happens again. Lovely inspiration as always though. Hugs! ❤️

Thanks, Amanda! Sadly, I discovered the party who sued me has a reputation for this… it was definitely a disheartening and impersonal money grab, but I learned some valuable lessons. Thanks for your kind words and for continuing to read here on the blog! You have no idea how much that means to me! I appreciate it. Hope your week is off to a good start!

  2. Gahhhh. That very first photo! This home is magnificent, I love every room, and the light fixture in the parlour is stunning, simplicity at its best.

Isn’t it stunning, Rita? Happy to hear you enjoyed this one!

  3. Good morning! I have missed these series featuring inspiration in spades- although I share in your trepidation to continue… that sounds like a horrendous ordeal to have gone through. This Monday morning tour is all the inspiration! What I’m paying most attention to in each space is the trim detail. In the entry, I’m loving the added detail and dimension capping the paneling. Of course the finishes are top notch, and the stairs are incredible, but I’m all heart eyes for the paneling. I’m eyeing where the baseboard meets the cabinets in the mudroom, and noticing the beauty in simplicity of the trim surrounding the window. I adore the slate or bluestone floor- such a beautiful compliment to the dark green cabinetry. I think this is my favorite space of the home. The breakfast nook is next for me. The light fixture is stupendous!! I adore the way they trimmed out these windows; functionally they have blended them into one large window, even though these are separate. I’m taking notes on this for my own double sets, and every iteration of this stops me in my tracks. Stunning! The parlor paneling is subtly awe inspiring. Look at the dimension in this room! My favorite moment is the paneling around the fireplace- trimming it out, highlighting its veined beauty, but taking nothing away. I adore the bench seat flanked by cabinets in the play room. That little peak of feet on the bench has my heart. Not only is this super functional, but absolutely gorgeous. That soaker tub in the bathroom!!😱😱 I’ve never seen such a beauty of a tub before. I love the repeat of tongue and groove paneling, as well as the flooring. Such a cohesive moment in here. And the arched opening of the shower…dreams! The laundry room provides yet another example of framing out two separate windows to appear visually as one. To say I love the trim and finishing touches in this tour would be an understatement. I have trim details on the brain, as most of the heavy choices for the front room have been made. We are hoping to have it wrapped up by Thanksgiving with the majority of the work. Now it’s down to finalizing base and trim choices. This post couldn’t be more timely inspiration. On the garden front, we knocked out some back breaking work this weekend: backfilling the large beds where the raised planters will sit, leveling, and lining the bottom of the raised beds with hardware cloth (gophers…iykyk). All but one bed and one arch trellis are set. Up next is the decorative gravel surrounding everything, and then we’ll be ready to fill and plant for fall. I can’t wait to share the final result. It’s been a lovely break from focusing on the indoor space, to play in the dirt and enhance a large area of the yard. Your weekend sounded supremely fun and relaxing! I hope your week is off to a fantastic start. Xoxo

Good morning, Lauren! I’ve missed these, too. The entire thing was ick (honestly a money grab), but I’m thankful to share this beauty by W Design Collective- they’re amazing, and I love that they’re local. All of the millwork throughout this home is perfection. They talk more about it in their substack, but everything is custom (and it shows). They have me itching for slate in our future laundry room and mudroom. I feel like that cool toned flooring would be perfect adjacent to our dark kitchen. I also loved the marble fireplace and soaking tub- it’s pinned to a secret board for our future bath, ha. So exciting to hear about your progress in the front room! Thanksgiving seems like an attainable goal. Good for you guys on tackling the garden over the weekend… that’s no easy feat! We’ll be doing our patio project all week, and I’m excited to begin the tile… though I know that’s also going to be a back breaking task. Camping felt like the perfect way to get away from it all and start the week fresh- really glad we made time for that. Thank you for being such a great friend- you made my day this morning! xo

  4. Good morning! Mercury retrograde, indeed. Love the subtle spiff-up though! Lawsuits, on the other hand, big fat BOO. I don’t claim to understand the intricacies of intellectual property, but AI seems to pose the greatest threat to creative endeavors imho. Properly credited, respectful sharing feels different. I lament the demise of some favorite posts, but you gotta respect a crystal clear legal message.☹️ On a more pleasant topic, THIS house! Simple, vintage, and undeniably East coast, cottage vibes. Just glorious. The cabinetry and millwork is masterful! The dreamiest. The combo of open and closed storage is brilliant, plus my favorite countertop cabinets! That green in the mudroom? *fans self* I also note many interesting, shapely sconces combined with more traditional pendants. Yes, please. I adore the well-chosen vintage furnishings and evocative art. Hello, barley twist table, striped settee, and moody florals! Honestly, A+ styling all around. I did chuckle when I read the designer’s lament that window treatments could not be installed before shoot day. All the beautiful naked windows spoke my language. Ha. These spaces exude a hushed warmth and appealing restraint. I’ve lived in the West for decades, but the sensibilities of the East lie deep in my bones. Thanks for sharing this lovely project! I look forward to time spent in the W Design Collective portfolio. Cheers to an amazing glitch-free week, Sarah!💜

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Good morning, Peggi! Mercury needs to get in line, ha. I actually think the forced homepage update ended up being for the best though- it pushed me to tackle that more quickly. Lawsuits are a definite BOO. The whole thing felt very icky, and don’t get me started on AI. I put a little disclaimer in my footer about it, since I don’t use AI here. It’s been a HOT topic in the design community and is already breaching copyrights, displacing jobs & income, etc. But yes- happier topic… this beautiful home! I noted so many favorite moments throughout this one. I know you’d spy that barley twist! I didn’t even miss the window treatments until reading that excerpt. I’m with you on West coast living but East coast design & sensibilities. I’ll always be divided! Cheers to a glitch free week, indeed. We were able to unplug all weekend and camp, which means I’m already in a happier mood to kick off the work week. I hope you also had a lovely weekend! Cooler temps this week are making me happy.

  5. Good Morning Sarah!
I’m saddened to hear you’ve had to deal with a lawsuit, you’ve always promoted other designers work in such a positive, supportive and professional manner. I understand why you would eliminate your 10 pins, design eye training as well as home tours series from the blog. Definitely disheartening!
However, I’m glad you were able to feature this beauty today!
What a stunning home and tour! I love dark wood accompanied and contrasted by soft creamy tones 😍 it’s such a warm, inviting and calming combination. Also love the light fixtures as well as the art selections. I admire the entrance with a stunning staircase and gorgeous bench to drop your purse or shopping bags. I’ve always had a bench or seating in every foyer and the practicality cannot be denied, not to mention this bench is incredibly lovely. The art pairing above it is so wonderfully sweet too! Of course I’m smitten with the dark green cabinets in the mud room 🥰 I certainly don’t regret painting my kitchen cabinets dark green, the warmth and moodiness creates such an inviting space. Speaking of kitchens this home has a glorious one 😍 Totally incredible! Love it!
Sarah I enjoyed this tour so much, thank you! Have a wonderful week 😎

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Good morning, Colleen! Thank you for that. Being a creative in the industry, I’ve always done my best to highlight and share sources appropriately. I’m glad it has showed! I’m also thankful to have so many friends in the design community who still enjoy sharing each other’s work- like W Design Collective today. They’re incredibly talented and I’m thrilled they allowed me to share this tour. I absolutely love your dark green kitchen cabinets. They’re perfect for your space! Happy to hear you liked this tour. Hope your week is off to an amazing start!

  6. Love the home tour – thank you for doing this! Do you know what green paint color they used in the mudroom?

  7. I’m sorry about the lawsuit. Totally different industry but I went through something similar and it’s stressful.

What a beautiful home! And thanks for identifying the wall treatment as tongue and groove. I kept thinking shiplap, but that seemed wrong (maybe a post on the difference?). It seemed more classic colonial than coastal. Both beautiful.

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Thanks, Dawn! Definitely a stressful and upsetting situation. I’m sorry you went through something similar. Isn’t this home gorgeous? I love the classic millwork details throughout. I’m with you on it feeling more colonial or cottage than coastal. Hope you’re having a great week!

  8. Marianne Brown says:

Sarah! What a lovely feature and I am so flattered by your kind words about not just our work but about us – it means a lot. Thank you for reaching out and thinking of us for your series. I think reinstating the home tour series will be very successful and I’m sure most, if not all, designers will be flattered to be featured on your site. You have such a great eye and thoughtful content. Let’s keep collaborating!

Also, we are having an open house for our new office space and for people to see our wallpapers and lighting in person on August 28th from 6 – 8 if you want to stop by! The Holladay Food Trucks will be out and then we will have drinks and dessert and hopefully fun people to chat about design with.
    Wishing you all the best!

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to share, Marianne! You and your team are incredibly talented and I’m constantly inspired by your work. I’d love to collaborate for more posts! Looking forward to your open house, and cannot wait to see those stunning wall coverings in person. Hope you’re having a wonderful week!

  9. The wall color of the parlor and breakfast nook is just so beautiful. It’s light and bright, and yet feels deep and rich.
    What is that color?

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

I’m not sure of the paint color- you could try messaging W Design Collective!

  10. Constance Whitley says:

I absolutely could move in to that house right now. I am getting ready to paint every room in my house and wonder what color the walls are. I’m thinking of doing SW Alabaster throughout, my rooms are darker right now and I think I need the calming effect of creamy walls with my antiques. Thank you for sharing this post. It is inspiring.
I feel sorry for you for the lawsuit, some people don’t have anything else to do but make others miserable. Put it behind you and know you know you are the better person. Keep on sharing and thank you again.

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Isn’t it beautiful, Constance? I have used Alabaster many times- it’s a beautiful color. Another nice creamy neutral I use often- Aesthetic White by Sherwin-Williams. Thanks for your kind words and for reading!
