Pillivuyt French Dinnerware vs Budget Target Dinnerware

Last winter, I discovered Target was selling a dinnerware set that looked nearly identical to the Pillivuyt French dinnerware I had previously purchased from Williams Sonoma. I shared my recent discovery on Instagram, and have since noticed many people have scooped up the Target set. I’ve also received some questions about how they compare, so I decided to share a firsthand comparison. Click through for a price breakdown, my thoughts & observations, a closer look at each set, and a detailed side-by-side comparison!

I first shared the budget beaded dinnerware set back in January, in this post: 15 Best Home Decor Finds from Target for 2024. I stumbled upon porcelain serveware that seemed like a close match to my current dishes, and decided to give it a try. Scroll on for a closer look…

My Williams Sonoma Pillivuyt Dinnerware

I splurged for the Pillivuyt beaded salad and dinnerware plates from Williams Sonoma 5-6 years ago, and have been so happy with them! These high-fired porcelain plates are made in France, are microwavable, oven safe, freezer safe, and are also dishwasher safe. Pillivuyt is a French producer of fine porcelain tableware since 1818. Their beaded dinnerware is incredibly durable and also has an elegant aesthetic- which makes it the perfect choice for both everyday meals and special occasions.

When strolling the aisles of Target one day, I stumbled across these Pillivuyt-esque plates, bowls, and serveware… but for a fraction of the price. They’re also made of durable porcelain, are microwave safe, dishwasher safe, and are great for everyday use. I also noticed the Target versions are very similar in shape and size.

Size & Price Comparison

The biggest aesthetic difference is the beading size and placement. The Pillivuyt plates (top) have more pronounced beading, which is situated at the edge of the plate. The Target plates (bottom) have smaller, subtle beading, which is fixed an inch or two from the edge.

What do you think? Would you save or splurge on these porcelain dinnerware options? I think both have a very timeless look.

One is made in France, one is made in China, both are made from an obviously durable material- porcelain. See the bottom stamps on each, above…

My Thoughts & Observations

While the price is vastly different, I do think both are great options. Here are my quick thoughts and observations:

  • The Pillivuyt set feels slightly heavier or more substantial.
  • The Target set seems to be a true white, while the Pillivuyt set appears a bit cooler.
  • Some of the Target plates have a center “lump” or imperfection in the center of the plate, whereas the Pillivuyt plates are totally flat (top notch craftsmanship).
  • I prefer the deeper inset beaded edge of the Pillivuyt set.
  • When stacked, the Target salad plate covers the beaded edge of the dinner plate… I think the Pillivuyt set looks nicer when styled on a table.
  • The plate edge of the Target set limits space for food, making the Pillivuyt set feel larger in terms of usable space.
  • I prefer the look of the Target bowls (with a small pedestal base) to the Pillivuyt bowls.
  • I prefer the look of the Pillivuyt coffee mugs to the Target coffee cups.

FAQ

Do you think the Target plates will hold up over time?

Without having used them for many years, it’s tough to say. Porcelain is incredibly durable, so I expect they’d wear well. Do they have the reputation that Pillivuyt has? No, but for the price- I think it’s worth a shot. I’d feel comfortable investing in a set.

Would you ever mix and match the two sets?

Absolutely! In fact- that’s exactly what I did. My salad and dinner plates are Pillivuyt, and I ended up grabbing the bowls, serving trays, and condiment cups from Target. They match so well and the price made sense.

Did you find the budget friendly set in-person at a Target store?

I did, but the stock was extremely low. I ended up ordering the rest of what I needed online.

  1. This is such a thoughtful and helpful review! I appreciate you attention to detail so much, and love that you see the value in both options.

I’m so glad to hear you liked this one, Sarah! I enjoyed drafting this post, too. Definitely value in both sets!

  2. Good morning! I love this type of post! My detail-oriented brain lives for scrutiny. Ha. I absolutely concur that both sets are lovely and timeless. The larger, more dramatic Pillivuyt bead serves subtle edge to my eye, while the Target set says staid. I actually favor the traditional flat, raised edge of the budget plates for neater presentation and fewer spilling mishaps, but… the way the detail is hidden by a stacked salad plate? Do not mar my tablescape! I also prefer the shape of the Target cereal bowl and mug, but tbh, these are pieces I generally wouldn’t purchase. I’d be tempted to buy openstock dinner plates and pasta bowls and call it good. (I didn’t note a price break for sets…) While I do find the Pillivuyt pieces more beautiful and distinctive, I’m unlikely to splurge on white dinnerware. I dream of Ginori Italiano or Bennington Potters spongeware. But you know I could yammer about dishes all day! I’m really dying for details of your surprise next project! Patiently counting the hours until Friday’s update. Happiest of midweeks, Sarah!💜

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Good morning, Peggi! I agree- these are fun for me, too. I know you take your tablescape styling VERY seriously! The sponge and speckleware definitely fits your aesthetic, and they’re so pretty! I could totally see you with those. I’m hoping to get Friday’s blog post drafted tomorrow with all the details… now to figure out how to entertain a 13 year old while I can sneak away for computer time. Haha! Hope you’re having a great week. We’ve got more fires here, but I’m glad the temps are a bit cooler!

  3. Great review! I love being able to see both side by side. Another dupe I’ve found is the beaded Everyday White by Fitz and Floyd, which can be found on Amazon.

  4. I loved this post!! — and the dishes! :)

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

So glad to hear that, Brenda! Thank you

  5. I actually don’t think they look that much alike – at least not the dinner/salad plates. They both have beads, but for me it’s similar to how camo for a forest and camo for a desert have a similar underlying theme but look very different. And no, I don’t know why that’s the analogy that sprang to mind…. :)

Anyway, I prefer the Pillivuyt plates, but that’s an affliction I have where I seem to always prefer the pricier thing even if I don’t know the price beforehand. I’d actually BUY the Target ones because I like them, too, but I wouldn’t feel I was getting a “real” dupe.

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Definitely a variation or version, modeled after the Pillivuyt set! I’ve been happy mixing and matching the sets, with our primary dinner and salad plates being the higher-end ones.

  6. Good morning! These are so close in size and style- and kudos to Target for offering a budget friendly, designer inspired look that is both classic and clean. Ultimately I would end up choosing the Williams Sonoma set, solely on weight. Personally, I like a set that has a little heft. I also agree that the placement of the detail on the Williams Sonoma set is more attractive. Mixing & matching is fun, and with a set this affordable, why not? Such a great find Sarah! Thanks for sharing a comparison.

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

They’re very close in size! Since posting this, I’ve been finding dupes everywhere… Amazon, At Home, Target, etc. I’ll admit- the Williams Sonoma ones definitely feel like a lifetime set in comparison. They’re hefty. We use the matching Target condiment bowls ALL the time though. It’s always nice to have options!
