How to Dress Up Your Door With a Classic Door Knocker

This was one of those projects that escalated quickly. As we’ve been working on our outdoor kitchen build, I thought it would be fun to dress up one of our exterior doors- purely for aesthetic purposes. The door that leads into our garage from the patio had seen better days. It was pretty busted up, but we decided to give it a fresh coat of paint and the next thing I know, I’m scrolling door knockers on Etsy. So it goes, ha! Click through for my best tips on how to dress up your door with a classic door knocker- along with 20 of my current favorites that are unique, timeless, and beautiful!

When we replaced the front door in our current home, we opted for double doors with windows to allow as much natural light in as possible. While I love the glass for the sake of a well-lit entry, I do miss having a place to mount a fun door knocker on our entry door. At our previous home, one of my favorite parts of replacing the front door was searching for the perfect vintage knocker. It made our home feel special and was an interesting first impression! While staring at our ugly garage entry door one day… I thought why not?! Bridging the gap between our outdoor cabinets felt like the perfect place to have a little fun. Check out this post if you missed the design plan for our outdoor kitchen build!

Obviously I landed on the terrier door knocker from the above collage. How could I not? It’s a fun tribute to our own cute terrier, Cash. I stumbled across this Etsy shop, and the name alone (Dogknockers) was an easy sell. Fellow dog lover and artist, Kerry, makes beautifully cast bronze door knockers with hand forged steel. They’re stunning! She does a number of dog breeds, so definitely check out her shop. The knocker also added a lot of weight to our door, which makes it feel higher-end (quick designer hack- splurge for heavy hardware).

Why Install a Door Knocker?

Though most of us have doorbells or doorbell cameras at this point, door knockers are obviously meant to be functional- you can use them to knock on the door. However, they’re primarily installed for decor and aesthetics. It’s the perfect way to add character, personality, and make a first impression.

Updating Our Patio Garage Door

Why install a door knocker on a garage entry door? Again, it’s purely cosmetic… I just think they’re fun! Obviously nobody is knocking to enter our side garage door, but I do love the way it looks. Door knockers can be used to visually balance a door, add personality, tie in a color palette, and of course- if they’re on your main or front door, they’re great for their intended purpose of knocking. This is what our garage door looked like before…

We decided to save money and keep the door, but we gave it a fresh coat of paint and a quick hardware swap. Check out this post for a detailed tutorial on how to paint a door. Emmett ended up spraying this one, but I’m partial to rolling & brushing (I’m still not cleared by my doctor for activity). We replaced the lock and added the door knocker, sticking with bronze to complement our newly installed outdoor kitchen cabinets & countertop… which I can’t wait to show you next week (if the weather cooperates). I got rained out last week before leaving.

FAQ

Will you trade the hardware?

Perhaps! I’d love to install this Grandeur hardware with a backplate (also in bronze), but we’d need to drill new holes and maybe even replace the entire door. We think someone busted this door before we moved here (it seems as though it was kicked in), Emmett had to do some serious repairs, which limited us to a simple lock and deadbolt.

Where did you find the horse door knocker on the front door of your previous home (pictured below)?

It was also an Etsy find! I actually found an identical match and included it in the collage (this mid century looking one). One of my biggest moving regrets was not bringing that door knocker with us. I should have thought to swap it before we moved… it was a special one to me.

  1. I love door knockers so much!! Good morning Sarah! Sadly our front door doesn’t have a decent spot for one; when we updated the front door, we selected one that has an oval window in the center of the top panel area. I’ve always wanted to install one, because although our doorbell works, for whatever reason guests always knock on our door, and we can’t hear it from inside the house. Rocky has become our doorbell. 🫠 I love this fun roundup- the Rejuvenation door knockers have always been my favorites. The lion head, and the classic ring; I’ve often thought about installing one of their simple, thin options but I’m not sure where the placement would work. Are there rules for knocker placement?? These are all so classic and fun. I love the knocker you landed on, and it definitely brings fun and personality to an otherwise utilitarian door. I hope the weather holds out for you to get your photos- I know the patio is looking stunning, but I can’t wait to see the finished project all pulled together. I hope you had an awesome weekend!

Same!! They’re so fun. I have two doggie doorbells as well. Haha! Those two love to bark. I don’t think there are specific rules for knocker placements- just in a functional spot. I wanted to add something fun to our boring and basic garage door. It was looking pretty sad and busted up back there. Amazing what paint and hardware can do! I’m excited to hang a wreath on it for the holidays. I just finished my photos last night and am working on the post for Wednesday. Super excited to share it!

  2. Good morning! I wondered which door was getting the cute terrier! Your images prove what a difference a little paint and hardware switch can make. Such an improvement. You’ll be spending SO much time out there with the new kitchen, why not add a touch of adorable whimsy? Now you’ve got another spot for a wreath too.😉 From your wonderful collage, you know I’m partial to the classic lion. While my Leo heart surely loves a giant, brassy Versailles moment, my modest Cape should probably sport something subtler. 🤣 Maybe a sweet star. I also have the difficulty of a large window. I see your example with the door knocker placed below the window, so I should noodle on that. What I’m really thinking about are your Maine stories!! I’m so excited for you to spend some time in my beautiful home state…during the most exquisite season! (Also, very, very envious. Sniff.) Have the best, best, best time, Sarah & Emmett!💜🍁

I can’t wait to host this spring. We’ll have one last autumn / Halloween party, and then we’ll have to wait until next year to enjoy the space. It’s looking so good though! I have no idea why I didn’t consider a wreath until now- definitely going to add one there. Thank you very much for that wise idea! Duh, Sarah. Now you’ve got me excited. There were some stellar door knockers on those colonial homes and greek revivals in Maine. Super inspiring! What a stunning home state you have. Wish you could have joined us, but your recommendations were spot on :)

  3. Happy Monday!
Oh gosh the little Cash door knocker is so incredibly sweet ❤️ the door looks so fresh and dazzling with the new hardware and adds so much pizzazz! Love it! I guess you could also hang a pretty wreath from it too, as it’s a decorative detail. I had no idea there was such a wide selection of door knockers available and it’s a beautiful ornamental detail I have never considered, and now I’m wondering why I overlooked it. Huh!
We actually have solid double exterior doors in our home here and it would totally work from an aesthetic perspective. Was it difficult to install? Would I install one on each door? Andrew is not the best with this kind of thing. He’s installed towel racks in the past that have come out of the wall over time 🫣 he’s good at so many things but this type of install is not his forte 😬 hanging them both evenly and centered will be his challenge. Hummmm……something to ponder.
I hope you’re having an awesome trip, I bet Maine is so beautiful especially this time of year 🍂
Your patio is going to be next level Sarah and I can’t wait to see everything come together 😍 Exciting! Happy travels and enjoy your day 💕

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Isn’t that so charming?! I love your idea of hanging a wreath from it this holiday- I’m definitely going to do that (thank you for the idea). It’s not at all difficult to install and comes with the hardware. It took Emmett five minutes. I love your thought to install one on each door for symmetry. I can’t wait to share the patio on Wednesday!! Or at least the kitchen part of it- we’re still tilling the other side. Hope you’re having a great day!

  4. So does that mean we don’t need to install traditional wired door bells anymore? Let’s just use handsome door knockers! But seriously, everyone installs their own camera doorbells and then should get a dogknocker (lol the name!).

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

I vote yes! Although I’m not going to lie… I do love our video door cam (so functional). Isn’t Dogknockers a clever name? SO good! :) I liked that, too.

  5. That knocker is perfection! We also have a mostly glass front door and I miss being able to have a knocker.

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Thank you, Dawn! Same- I’ve been wanting one, but it would never work for our front doors.
