Timeless Furniture Finds from Wayfair (Designer Capsule Picks)

One of my friends just purchased a home and asked if I had timeless furniture recommendations, or if I could suggest a source for those key pieces. She’s ready to begin investing in furniture for the long haul, that won’t go out of style, will wear nicely, and is sure to grow with her as her aesthetic may change or evolve. Those questions are always difficult because it’s not an easy answer. Racking my brain to text her back, I decided to pull together this month’s Wayfair post and create a designer capsule collection for furniture. Consider this your guide to timeless furniture finds! It contains quality furniture, longterm pieces to invest in, classic shapes, natural materials, solid craftsmanship, and if you’re saving up- it’s an inspiring place to begin thinking about the framework for your floor plan. This is the type of furniture you hang onto for decades! I also included all price points… some higher-end heirloom priced pieces and some budget friendly options mixed throughout. It’s a good one! I’ve included furniture of all types for every room in your home. These can easily blend to complement any aesthetic, and many can be styled in multiple rooms.

My Furniture Picks

I’ve included furniture of all types for every room in your home. These can easily blend to complement any aesthetic, and many can be styled in multiple rooms. Below you’ll find 35 of my capsule furniture picks from Wayfair. These are in no particular order, but I had to break them into two separate collages… there were too many beautiful options! Everything is clickable.

Click directly on each item within the collage to be directed to the source!

As always, I’m drawn to timeless wood tones, natural materials, classic upholstery, and woven pieces for texture. A fun way to think about capsule furniture is to think back to your favorite movie sets (re: Nancy Meyers sets are always A+), and see what films have aged well in terms of interior aesthetic. What movies did not? What timeless furniture picks do you still love from movies 15-20 years ago? That’s always my goal… buy for the long haul, avoiding trends or pieces that will go out of style.

Do you have top picks from the two collages I pulled together? Are there any other items you’d add? I’d also love to hear what pieces of furniture have been with you for more than 10 years? What do you love about them?

Capsule Furniture Checklist

When you’re creating a foundation for the floor plan of your home- or are filling in gaps… I also love to supplement with vintage finds. You never know what you’ll come across! I wanted to create a printable checklist for you. You can save it, print it, pin it… whatever format you like best, but I hope it helps you plan a cozy & timeless footprint that feels inviting and functional. Maybe you can already check a lot of these boxes. The next time you buy a piece of furniture (new or used), take a look at what you really need for a well rounded aesthetic. I’m always guilty of purchasing too many chairs, but could use more linear pieces (like consoles or demilunes). A list is just an easy visual way to take inventory of what you’re bringing into your home. Of course this list will vary depending on the size & layout of your home- if you have multiple bedrooms, you’ll obviously need multiple beds. But this should give you good variety and help you brainstorm.

FAQ

What type of furniture do you have the most of?

Probably tables. I can always find a place to tuck in a table or style a small surface. From side tables to entryway tables, consoles, demilunes, and dining… I’ve collected quite a few over the years. I’ve also found they make great filler pieces.

What is the most underrated piece of furniture, in your opinion?

Underrated, I would say benches & ottomans. I love how they look, they’re a great supplementary pieces, are useful, and provide an extra styling surface. They can live in any room and are just really versatile. Highly rated and for good reason? I’d say seating… you want to be comfortable!

  1. Good morning! Such lucky friends to have a talented designer on call.😉 Of course, your selections are beautiful and timeless! I’m especially interested in all of the occasional tables, benches, and ottomans. They are such useful pieces that I’m either lacking or would like to upgrade. I’m still wowed by the breadth of Wayfair’s offerings. That slipcovered sofa comes in over 60 fabrics, and the groovy turned legs on the black coffee table? Love ‘em. Speaking of coffee tables, that’s one item in my house that I’ve had for nearly 20 years that I wouldn’t change. It’s a Lane Acclaim series that I snapped up for $20 at the local Goodwill. The size is perfect for our space, and I adore the giant dovetails. I’m not sure I can remember furniture from movies, but I do enjoy perusing old interior magazines to see how my favorite features have fared. Not gonna lie, Martha Stewart forever. Ha. Thanks for always giving me something to ponder. Now, I have to think about walking Joe in the rain. I hope you are continuing to mend and slowly working back up to top speed. Have a fantastic Wednesday, Sarah!💜

Ha! I do what I can, lol! I’ll virtual shop any day… with all of my down time, I’ve certainly been doing a lot of scrolling. I love those functional “filler” pieces of furniture, like the benches, ottomans, and tables. So awesome to hear that you’ve had your coffee table for 20 years and it’s the one piece you’ll forever keep. Those are the most special! It sounds beautiful. Martha forever… I’m with you on that. I hope you and Joe had a fabulous rainy walk. I kind of love it! We’re having rain today :)

  2. Happy Wednesday Sarah!
Playing catchup today after a busy close at the cottage and returned to whip up a Thanksgiving feast for the family this past weekend 🥵
Your furniture Wayfair curation has a timeless Sarah Gibson aesthetic for sure. Honestly with the exception of our dining set and Murphy bed in guest room all our furniture is a combination of things we acquired over the past 20 plus years.
I think my favorite I would never part with is my wooden Bernhardt bench that resides in our entryway. I’ve also had many pieces custom made by a local furniture store which I also adore. I did purchase decent quality so it’s all lasting and holding up quite well. Both from a durable and style prospective. I agree with your philosophy and if you really love something no matter the style chances are you’ll love it in 20 years. I never did shop vintage so I don’t have any super cool furniture pieces like you do however thanks to my mother I have a few decor pieces that are vintage ( I think are cool and timeless ☺️) A modern silver tray from the 70s as well as an amber fruit bowl, and brass candlesticks. I inherited a few things like that on the decor side of design which are nice keepsakes.
I’m happy to hear your recovering nicely and taking it easy. However Emmett is beyond busy with that patio. My gosh he must be exhausted, he has a day job too! It’s looking beautiful 😍 He is a man of many talents!!
Enjoy your trip to Maine and hopefully it provides an opportunity to rest, recover and recharge ❤️ Cheers and love the Wayfair furniture selection, it’s top notch!!

I’m also playing catch up, Colleen! I hope you had the best Thanksgiving! I love that your furniture has withstood the test of time. That’s what I hope for ours as well. Bernhardt furniture definitely holds up- fun to hear about your bench being your favorite, and your other inherited pieces. It’s snowing in the mountains, so it’s really going to be a push to get the tile done in time. The weather really shifted on us this week. Fingers crossed we can knock it out once we get home from our travels! So glad you liked this post :) Love to hear that! xo

  3. Good morning! I have been deep diving on Wayfair off and on for the past 6 months. I’ve got to say, I have fallen in love with using Wayfair as a source. They have so much to choose from, and I find it’s similar to FBMP- the more I browse and save items I love, the more I see similar pieces and similar quality upon searching something new. I’m happy to report I (FINALLY) found an entertainment stand I love, and it’s the most gorgeous piece I’ve ever found on Wayfair. Your roundups are always so good- I love the benches, ottomans, and side tables. I’m also swooning over the four poster bed. Thank you for the checklist- I’ve pinned it for later and can’t wait to see where I can add a dash of this or a pinch of that. It’s fall in Ca; leaves are changing, temperatures are lowering, and we have our first rain of the season this morning. I’m not mad about it. Cheers to a productive day enjoying the sound of rain on the roof! I hope your week is panning out wonderfully!

Hi Lauren! They’re an awesome resource. I’ve loved working with them on my series posts because it’s a place we shop often during renovations. I also like that you can categorize lists- separating your favorites. That makes saving the things you need so much easier. They definitely show you similar items to what you’re searching for, which is nice since they have SO many things. YAY for finding an entertainment stand you love. I know you’ve been on the hunt for quite some time. That’s exciting! Hope you and the fam are having the best fall season. I bet CA is stunning right now. We’re having a rainy day here, too. xo
