Realistic Faux & Dried Branches to Style This Autumn

Happy Friday! We’re halfway through October, so as we head into November- the season of hosting and tablescapes, I thought it would be fun to share my favorite realistic faux (and dried) branches to style this autumn. Of course, you can also venture into your backyard and snip some live branches, but if you’re trying to avoid the mess, don’t have great options at home, or would like branches you can use year-after-year (everlasting), these offer the perfect classic, colorful, and textural touch. Click through for my top picks and styling tips…

If you missed this post, definitely click over and check out how to easily style branches for fall! I shared my favorite mesh inserts, floral frogs, and quick tips for simple and timeless autumnal arrangements. Once you’ve got the hang of it, this post will offer the best current selections. In the above image, I used these dried & preserved oak leaves in my kitchen. They take quite a bit of fluffing, but are an easy, affordable option.

Textural and Colorful Fall Branches

I love the hues the fall season brings! I think I may need to invest in a few more variations, to save for next year- many are on sale right now. I’m also partial to magnolia branches because they can be used year round… you’ll often find them throughout my house. Which are your favorites?

Styling Oversized Branches

When styling oversized branches, my biggest tip is to avoid overstuffing your vessel… less is more. The negative space larger or taller branches create is visually appealing. It’s an easy and affordable way to create a sculptural look with the height and width you’re looking to achieve. Embrace the negative space!

If your branches aren’t very tall, but you’d like to add height to your arrangement… grab a taller vessel, stuff the bottom with newspaper or recycled packaging, then place a mesh frog just inside the top of the vase for stability. It’s an easy hack I use often.

Styling Bud Vases

Don’t forget to reach for your empty bud vases! You can use wire cutters to snip faux branches, paring them down to fit into smaller vessels. These are perfect for styling on a bedside table, demilune, console, or tucked out of the way on a countertop or cluttered coffee table. They’re great for adding a smaller pop of color and texture to any vignette.

FAQ

Are the preserved oak branches you used in the kitchen messy? Do they drop leaves?

They’re not messy once they’re arranged and do not drop leaves… but during the fluffing process, they have a tendency to break and crumble. It’s a delicate process! I worked mine over the sink for easy clean up. They do have a bit of a preserved odor, but once they air out- it’s less noticeable.

Is it ok to mix and match faux fall branches?

Of course! Get creative with them and do what feels best to you. I prefer the consistency of a single look per container, but I have many branch varieties scattered throughout our home at the moment: magnolia branches, oak branches, grape vine branches, and maple.

Using Live Branches

I also wanted to mention the use of live branches… if you have any nice colorful options in your backyard, you can definitely venture outside to snip some (free) branches. I give them a good shake or use the leaf blower to dust them off before bringing them indoors. Smash the bottom of the branch, then add a bit of water to your vessel to keep them looking their best for longer. They’ll begin to drop leaves and may not last very long, but it’s a great alternative if you’re hosting or need a last minute arrangement.

  1. I have a confession… or three. 1) I haven’t even decorated for Halloween this year. Normally I go full out because birthday month, but with the house in upheaval from renovating, the mere thought of adding more chaos and clutter doesn’t sound appealing. 2) I’m not the greatest at styling stems or bouquets. I’ve tried, and rarely can achieve anything like your stunning examples. 3) I haven’t invested in stems or vessels which complicates the process. I have vases that are beautiful hand me downs or vintage finds, but nothing that’s a fantastic year-round addition. And stems? Zero to be had. Once we’re at the styling phase in the front room I need to find something I love. A taller, neutral but textural piece like the one pictured above in your guest room, with some gorgeous tall stems. Your arrangements always stop my scroll- I love the more structural looking ones that offer negative space, and aren’t too dense. Here’s to hoping I can find something I love when the time is right. We have a windy Friday ahead- yesterday was pool closing day, and I’m glad we got it done, but boy is my body sore. What does everyone have planned this weekend? Cheers to 🍕 Friday everyone!

I love it! If it’s confession time… I’m in the same boat. I did very minimal fall decorating this year- mostly just our porch, and some darker textiles & candles in the living room… and as of this week, these branches. Renovating will definitely do that! You can only juggle so much at home. Your front room will be worth it though! You’ll definitely find some pretty options once the time is right :) It sounds like y’all have been super productive with the house and the pool closing. We’re headed to Maine tmrw! I’m excited. Hope you guys have an amazing weekend, too!

  2. Good morning! Oh my, your collage alone is pretty enough to frame! Fall colors really are irresistible. While I always admire your gorgeous sculptural branch arrangements, like Lauren, I can’t say mine ever look quite right. I think my vases are undersized for a full branch situation. TBH, I think my house might be undersized too.🤣 Another issue? I overstuff the vase. That strategy works with florals, but I’m hearing you about the negative space for branches.😉 Maybe I’ll experiment with a single snip in one of my smaller vases. I recently used cattails and some unknown seedy weed for my Libra birthday table; I’m not shy about foraging. Although Wednesday’s rain and yesterday’s frigid winds have taken a toll on some of the leaves, the pickings are still plentiful. Today’s glorious sunshine calls for an extra long trek to appreciate all of the splendor. Cheers to a delicious Pizza Friday and wonderful October weekend, friends!🍁💜

Good morning, Peggi! I do love fall colors- especially orange, yellow, and red hues against our dark cabinets. I think with branches- less is more. Just drop them in and try not to fuss over it too much. Ha, idk! I love cattails (they remind me of home on the farm)- maybe you’ll inspire me to put some in a vase. We always get your weather a day late- so the wind, rain, and cold arrived here yesterday… which is kind of nice. It definitely feels like autumn. Glad you’re getting some sunshine today, though! Have an amazing weekend. We’re off to Maine tmrw :)

  3. Good morning 🍁
I always love fall inspiration Sarah as it is my favorite season! The dried oak flowers on your island are gorgeous 😍 The contrasting orange tones are striking showcased against the blue kitchen. I adore deep rich oranges with blue, so pretty. In January this year when I reached Florida I revisited last years fall post “ How to Easily Style Branches for Fall” and purchased faux terra cotta eucalyptus branches from afloral and I styled them on my Thanksgiving table last week. I have fall placemats that are quite colorful and dinnerware the same blue as your kitchen so it all looked so gorgeous together. I actually didn’t decorate much compared to most years as it’s been a busy season thus far and we have too many other projects on the go. But I never tire of seeing your beautiful home styled to perfection year after year 🥰
Andrew and I captured the most beautiful fall photos of the changing leaves of the mountains reflecting into our lake at the cottage. I think I’ll actually print and frame for fall decor next year. So many ways to appreciate this stunningly colorful season ❤️
Anyway have a fantastic weekend, my daughter Sarah and I are headed to a Justin Timberlake concert tonight! Hopefully he shows up 😬 Cheers!

Good morning, Colleen! Same here, and thank you! A Floral has the prettiest branches. I’m so glad you were able to grab them for your Thanksgiving table- I bet they were beautiful. Your lake and cottage photos sound stunning… I can only imagine it’s an incredible landscape up there! I love your idea of printing and framing them. Have fun with Sarah at the Justin Timberlake concert! I got a good laugh out of your “hopefully he shows up” comment, lol! Have a great weekend! xo
