The Best Apartment Size Refrigerators and Organization Tips

Today’s design topic is a specific one pertaining to kitchen design. I had a friend ask me if I had any recommendations for an apartment sized refrigerator, only for me to realize- I have and use two on the regular. One lives in our basement bar, which we primarily utilize as a beverage fridge… and the other lives at our Tuesday Made office in the kitchenette. Ironically, they’re both the same cream color. I would actually recommend both of these refrigerators for different scenarios. Obviously there are pros and cons for each. I thought it may be helpful to dissect this topic, if you’re also designing for a small space, have limited space in the kitchen, or are on the hunt for a smaller scale fridge. Click through for my top two recommendations, the best apartment size refrigerators, a side-by-side comparison, along with some easy organization finds to maximize the storage capacity in your existing fridge!

My Refrigerator Criteria – Buy Guide

The Best Apartment Size Refrigerators and Organization Tips - roomfortuesday.com

As a designer, I prefer either a panel-ready appliance or a refrigerator that intentionally matches the kitchen palette. If you’re spending money to renovate a kitchen, appliances can quickly make or break the overall aesthetic. Of all the major brands, the two apartment sized fridges I felt had the best aesthetic (and color selections) were from Smeg and Big Chill… two reputable brands. Of course I also had a criteria for functionality and reliability. Here are some questions I consider when purchasing a refrigerator (of any size):

  • Does it fit my kitchen dimensions?
  • Is it counter depth or standard?
  • Does it align with the kitchen aesthetic? Color, metal, hardware, form, etc.
  • Does it have good reviews? Is it reliable?
  • How will it function or be used in my space?
  • What features will I need or use most often?
  • Does it open directionally, and can the door swing be specified or changed as needed?
  • Are customizations available? Color, hardware, panel ready, door swing, etc.
  • Does it have a warranty?
  • Can I get it into my space? Dimensions can fit down staircases, turn corners, etc.
  • Does it have an ice maker?
  • Does it have water filtration?
  • Is it energy efficient?
  • What is the noise level?

Smeg Refrigerator

The Smeg is a great choice if you’re looking for a good compact fridge. It’s one of the smaller models for an apartment size refrigerator. It has reversible doors, an energy star rating, adjustable glass shelves, and is ideal for smaller living spaces. While it’s a very energy-efficient fridge, I think the freezer compartment is the biggest drawback for me. It’s a top-freezer refrigerator, but the freezer section does not have a separate door. It’s eye level (which is nice), but you still have to open the main door to access the small freezer door. The freezer also has a tendency to become icy, which requires attention from time to time. Take a peek inside and check out the different features for this compact option below… it’s minimal, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. Please, no judgement on the contents of our office fridge, ha! It needs a restock.

Big Chill Refrigerator

The Big Chill 30″ Classic Range has a lot of special features. I love that it can be totally customized- from the hardware to the paint color. I was able to perfectly color match my kitchen cabinets when upgrading the cabinet doors. It was the best fit for our basement bar because of its adjustable shelves, built-in ice maker, digital temperature controls, and storage space… making it ideal for a large beverage fridge. If we wanted to use it for food, it also has handy crisper drawers, a bottom freezer, and easy access to storage organizers. I also have to mention Big Chill’s customer service- they’re fantastic. Should we ever need anything (even outside of the warranty period), I have zero doubts it would be an issue. They’re top notch… and I’m picky about that- especially after experiencing issues with my GE Cafe Range. Here’s a peek inside…

Smeg v Big Chill Comparison

Not all apartment refrigerators, are created equal, but I honestly love these two. Here is a quick side-by-side comparison of the two, strictly based on specs. They both have pros and cons, but if I had to choose only one (my personal preference)… I’d go with Big Chill. It is a bit larger, has a full size separate freezer, ice maker, and is available in more colors & finishes- with customizable hardware.

FAQ

How do you know what is an appropriately sized refrigerator for your space?

The best way is to floor plan in advance, take detailed measurements, tape it out for a visual, and compare capacity to your existing fridge. You should also consider your household size. If you’re using the refrigerator as a second fridge, that might also influence your decision on size. Choosing a major appliance is a big decision, but stick to reputable brands, double check specs, consider your aesthetic, and you’ll land on the right refrigerator.

I know you use your basement refrigerator as a beverage fridge, but does it hold excess food from your main kitchen?

Oddly, not really. We’re a two person household, so we always have plenty of room in our main fridge. The freezer does hold a few frozen pizzas and the occasional pint of ice cream, but that’s it. We hardly ever buy refrigerated or frozen goods in bulk, so we just haven’t had a need for extra space. It is nice to know that’s an option, should we need it though! That also reassures me we landed on the right fridge for our main kitchen. It’s the perfect size!

I hope this is helpful if and when you’re in the market for a smaller fridge! Does anyone need help shopping for other home appliances? I’d be happy to weigh in, as I know they’re a big investment. We’ve obviously been working on our outdoor kitchen build, so we just solidified a built-in grill and outdoor refrigerator. Here’s to a productive week ahead! I think I’m going to begin transitioning our home for fall this week. Temperatures are supposed to dip, and I’m embracing it!

  1. Good morning! What a helpful comparison! Your list of considerations is so comprehensive too. You mention noise level. Is that information usually included in the specifications? I remember this was true when I was shopping for range hoods (because of the exhaust fan), but I honestly never thought of it for our refrigerator. (ours can be sort of loud🙄) As for looks, I really like both of your models! What I especially love is that the office kitchenette proves a Smeg blends seamlessly into a classic, timeless design; I’ve mostly seen them in more retro, kitchy sitches. The difference in capacity between the two is pretty significant though. I remain smitten overall with the Big Chill. The bewitching boxiness. Handsome, hefty hinges. The countless, custom colors?! (Ahem. Pastel Violet, universe.) Despite a distinct, and disappointing, lack of lacquer, our current fridge functions fine. I am eyeing some of those containers though because the organization could certainly be improved. I’m envious of your CSA membership! Would you believe no one in my agricultural area offers one? I do frequent a fabulous farmstand, so that’s nice. You know what’s also nice? We are getting the same cool down this week! I’m ready. Cheers to a great week, Sarah!💜

Hi Peggi! Awesome question- both manufacturers included the noise level in the specs as well. The Big Chill fridge is just so cool with that bulky hardware and I love that it’s available in so many colors. I’m clearly smitten. The Smeg works well for our office though. I am seriously shocked to hear you don’t have a CSA nearby since you live in an agricultural area. Missed opportunity! The local farm stand sounds fabulous though! We’ve had so much delicious fruits, veggies, and greens in our box this summer. We definitely want to do it again next year. Although, it makes me want to live on a farm again. Hope you enjoyed the cool down today! xo

  2. Good morning Sarah! It hadn’t occurred to me that both your basement fridge and the shop fridge would be perfect for an apartment (head smack). They’re both aesthetically pleasing options, that’s for sure! Your breakdown of features/pros & cons is informative and helpful, for those in the market. Don’t mind me gawking at your organization bins- I have a few myself, but the lidded soda can organizer is next level- mine don’t have lids, and though they claim to stack, it’s not practical once loaded. I may need to upgrade to these so I can maximize fridge space. How do you like those? In other news- the patio tile looks gorgeous and I can’t wait to see the finished result. I hope your weekend was restful and relaxing. Schools are closed today due to the massive fire in my area; I’m looking forward to a slower paced day with the kids. Cheers to cooler weather, and the slow approach of fall! Have a fantastic Monday!

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Hi Lauren! I also didn’t realize I had two smaller fridges in the exact same color. Clearly I have a type. Lol! I live for organization, even in the fridge. It makes my heart so happy. I do love the stackable soda organizers- it’s nice to have that top surface. The patio tile is taking forever, but Emmett has been outside every night working on it. Ugh, I’m so sorry to hear about the fires. I’ve been seeing them on the news and didn’t realize they were so close. I’ll keep you and your community in my thoughts & prayers. Hope you and the kids have had some good indoor time.

  3. Good Morning!
It’s a cool but sunny day in the mountains. After a weekend of cold and rainy temperatures I’m super thrilled to see the sun.
Your post is a wealth of info on two incredibly beautiful refrigerator options and we need a new one very badly here at the cottage. I’m not sure how old this bad boy is but I’m sure it’s going to give out soon. I’d rather replace it before that happens given the long timelines to get appliances these days. I appreciate your review of the Smeg especially as I highly considered that one but the sizing doesn’t work. Unfortunately, Big Chill are not in Canada but would be an excellent option as the sizing is perfect and the array of colors to choose from is astounding. We have a vintage gas stove so having a vintage looking refrigerator would be ideal but it’s proving to be a challenge. The search continues……
I hope you had a restful weekend Sarah (feeling better) and I’m excited to see your outdoor kitchen. I don’t have instagram so I can’t follow along on the progress but it sounds like it’s going to be another spectacular project completed by team Gibson 🥰 So excited for you! Cheers to a sunny Monday 😎

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Hi Colleen! Hope you’ve been having more sunny days! Very cool that you have a vintage gas stove. I wish Big Chill was available in CA for you- they have a retro line that would be perfect. If I see anything that is available in your area, I’ll be sure to pass it along. Thanks for your kind words! I’m finally feeling more like myself this week- just in time for fun travel. I can’t wait to share more of our outdoor kitchen. That patio tile is looking beautiful. Hope you had a great day!

  4. I’ll probably have to settle for something a bit more utilitarian that fits my budget – but a Buttercup Yellow Retro Big Chill refrigerator would be soooo nice in our basement. During the summer our garden harvest sometimes overwhelms the available space in our kitchen refrigerator. Plus by the end of the season I’m hoping to squeeze one more package of something in the chest freezer! Currently we have a tiny dorm cube refrigerator down there but a half gallon of milk, three dozen eggs and a couple cartons of Egg Beaters leaves just enough room for Momma’s three month supply of insulin!

Additional freezer space would give me a place to flash freeze things (berries or blanched, sliced squash) before packaging them for the chest freezer as well as a place to stash things I’m saving for when I have time (tomatoes for sauce or chopped cantaloupe for jam). And additional refrigerator space would come in handy for space hogs like kale and spinach so I don’t have to process them immediately.

Maybe if I save my pennies then by the time I convince my husband that it’s necessary I can fit the Big Chill in my budget – wish me luck!

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

I do love the color, Cheryl! It sounds like you have a wonderful garden with an even better yield. Good luck- hopefully you can upgrade to a bigger option soon :)
