How to Create Beautiful Porch Planters for Fall

I spent much of yesterday cleaning, organizing, and prepping our house for the season ahead. While it’s still warm here and feeling far from fall, I’ll be traveling next week, followed by surgery- so this was my window to make our home feel festive for autumn. I started with our front porch planters- something I look forward to arranging every year. Instead of an oversized mum (always a classic), I decided to mix it up by layering multiple textural plants. I planted coleus, potato vine, thistle, berries, in addition to the mum for a festive color palette. Click through for the source links, a quick tutorial, and for a closer look. Here’s how to create these beautiful porch planters for fall! These are also low maintenance, thanks to the faux components. That’s right… not all of these plants are living!

Last year, I shared how to easily style branches for fall, and this porch planter follows a similar creative process. If you’re filling window boxes for the season ahead, you’re also going to want to check out my tutorial for styling a fall window planter box, here.

Mixing Live & Faux Plants – Supply List

When styling textural planters or window boxes (click here to learn how to install window flower boxes), you want to keep three basic plant types in mind: thrillers, fillers, and spillers. What exactly does that mean?

Thrillers = the star plant… something that commands attention or feels most interesting. In this case, the thriller is the mum.

Fillers = plants that take up the bulk of the planter, adding mass, and filling negative space. In this case, the filler is the coleus.

Spillers = provide balance, break the grid, add a dramatic organic element, and quite literally spill over the edge of the planter or window box, anchoring the vessel. In this case, I used potato vine and a different variety of coleus to spill out of the planter. Here is my complete supply list:

Plant the Base Layer

I began by planting the coleus first, to create a nice base… which filled the majority of my (very dirty) planter. I selected this one because it’s easy to keep alive, has a beautiful autumn color, and does great in the shade- like under my covered porch.

Add the Quintessential Fall Mum

Next, I added the thriller… which is a vibrant orange mum. I kept it front and center for a classic fall aesthetic.

Style the Spiller

I styled the purple potato vine and a different variety of coleus to spill over the edge of the planter, breaking the grid. You can always add more later in the process- but it’s nice to visually get a sense for how much you have.

Incorporate the Filler & Faux Picks

I added a bit more coleus, along with the faux berries and thistle, fluffing and styling with each addition. I was also careful to pack the dirt or soil, making sure the interior was nicely planted. I gave it a good water from the base, before cleaning up my planter. This is how it turned out…

If you’re looking for similar pedestal planters, mine came from Lowe’s years ago. I love the timeless look of a black curved pedestal planter. It looks classic year round.

FAQ

Can you share more about your door hardware? It’s beautiful!

Thank you! I love it, too. Check out this post where I compared Grandeur vs Emtek Exterior Door Hardware.

How do you water the planters with faux sprays in the way?

The base of the picks are plastic and they don’t go very deep into the soil, so I water the planter from the base. I insert the nozzle of my watering can into the plant, making sure to water the live plants rather than showering the entire plant from above.

Can you link your doormat?

Of course! This is my front doormat (photographed throughout this post), but I have to say- we have this doormat, which looks nearly identical, in front of the French doors that lead to our back patio… it’s holding up better and is a fraction of the price. Same size, too!

  1. Good morning! Love the way these turned out! The orangey, bronzy, burgundy palette slays, and I super dig the textural bristley berry elements. Do you suppose the faux will need adjusting as the live plants grow? I currently have several black/fuchsia coleus thriving in my shade beds, but I’ve not seen that particular autumnal colorway. 😍 Such an amazing specimen for bringing color to the shade. I always admire your commitment to fall planting. My focus generally turns to cleanup and harvesting. I have aimed to try late season crops in the vegetable garden, but the ^%$&# critters have foiled every single seeding attempt thus far.🤦🏻 In fact, I’ve had the most disappointing yields ever this year. ☹️ Mother Nature providing a lesson in humility instead of glorious tomatoes. Sigh. She’s kicking up a little storm and a much-anticipated cool down atm, so I’m grateful for that. While I won’t be filling urns (great selection btw!), you have inspired me to get to work sprucing up inside. Got to set the stage for my impending equinox celebration. Cheers to a pleasantly busy week. (I’ll be happy to be half as productive as you are!🤣) And yay for RFT newsletters! You’ve already got me trained to scan my Tuesday inbox. Have a lovely day, Sarah!💜

Hi Peggi! Thank you, thank you! I had fun with these. I doubt I’ll need to adjust the faux plants, and I don’t expect them to grow all to much before the snow starts flying here and I swap things for the holidays, ha. Who knows though! I’ll keep you posted on how they evolve. I wish I would have got some of that pretty coleus for my shed window boxes, but those are still going strong. I’ll leave them and toss on some pumpkins. Ha! Ughh the critters! I’m sorry to hear about your garden. Our tomatoes have been totally out of control this year. Cash has also taken to digging in the garden bed this year, so I’m with you on the lower yield. Today finally felt cool for the first day this season- I’m so here for it… especially with all these fires. Thanks again for the sweet email! Can’t wait to hear about your equinox! xo

  2. Your autumn arrangements are stunning Sarah! And I love the mix of real and faux such a beautiful array of textures and colors. The layers and plant selections are so very pretty and nestle perfectly in your planters. We just returned from the cottage and you’ve inspired me to get my summer planters in fall mode.
I’m so excited you get to go to NYC and LA, so amazing and fun! The BHG stylemakers event should be such a wonderful event for you to collaborate with design colleagues and see upcoming trends. Yay! And a bachelorette party in LA 🍸 woohoo! Sounds like a blast 🥳 Have the most awesome time 🫶 Thanks for the tutorial and inspiration on your gorgeous fall arrangements. I hope my can look even half as good 🍂 🪴 hope your day is terrific!

Thank you so much, Colleen! I hope you had the best few weeks at your cottage. Welcome home! Have fun working on your planters this week. I’m very much looking forward to NYC and LA- I’ll have to share all the details once I’m back home recovering post surgery. Hope you’re having a lovely week! xo

  3. Good morning Sarah! I love seeing your fall arrangements every year- you do such a fantastic job of pairing plants together. The autumn palette is serving fall in the best way, and the textures are brilliant. I also adore your selection of pots and urn style planters. I need to take a stroll through my local Lowe’s! I’ll admit, I’ve given up prettying my porch. Plants (even heat tolerant, full Sun) just die. I even told Jeff that my first must-have if we ever move, is a home that faces anywhere but south. Ha! For now, I’ll gawk and envy yours. I hope you’re feeling progressively better this week- how fun that you have some travel lined up before surgery. The BHG tastemakers event sounds like a trove of inspiration and connection. Our week has been derailed with wildfire- if you’ve seen in the news, the Line Fire is barreling through the mountains of my community, and the Bridge fire is ravaging the mountains of our neighboring county- not to mention a slew of other fires; we’re basically surrounded by fire, and every local school district has cancelled school because of the smoke. 🫠 We’re all well, thankfully, and enjoying a little more quality time together. I hope you’re having a rejuvenating week!

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Hi Lauren! I’ve been thinking about you. I was wondering how the neighborhood fire containment was coming. I read about the Line Fire and the Bridge fire. It’s so sad- I’m sorry! That’s scary- way too close. We’re dealing with the same thing (thought probably not quite as close)… so many broke out around here this week thanks to lightning and the air quality has been thick with smoke. Thanks for your sweet words about my porch- it’s something I always look forward to styling this time of year. I knew this would be my only chance before surgery. I’m feeling so much better! I developed OHSS post IVF, but I’m finally almost back to my norm. Despite the fires, I’m glad you guys are getting good quality time and making the most of it. Thinking of you! xo

      1. As of this morning reports regarding damages are coming in- so many homes lost to these local fires. Both are at around 20% containment thanks to overnight moisture and smoke screening. Having the smoke hang around in the air makes for terrible air quality, but it’s actually better for getting these fires under control. I’m sorry to hear you guys are experiencing the same thing. Yesterday a man who is suspected to have intentionally started at least two of the fires burning, was arrested. It sounds like it’s possible he is responsible for more than just the large ones- incredibly sad. I hope you guys are faring well despite your fires, and staying away from the smoke as much as possible!

        1. Sarah Gibson says:

I hope they made some good progress over the weekend. I can’t believe both were intentional human-started fires. That is wild! What is wrong with people? I’m glad they were able to find the suspect- so sad. Our air finally cleared up over the weekend and we were able to sneak in one last boating day for the summer. If you guys make it back to SLC next summer, you should come out with us! Hope you had an equally as relaxing weekend :)
