Setting Our Thanksgiving Table & Decorating the Dining Room

The next stop on my holiday home tour is our dining room. While the space itself isn’t completed or renovated, that doesn’t stop us from putting this room to good use. It’s a blank canvas that makes for an easy space to style until we find the time or energy to tackle this room. My father-in-law arrives this week and will be spending Thanksgiving with us, so I styled a smaller scale tablescape. Click through for my simple process for setting a Thanksgiving table, and to see the dining room currently decorated for the holidays.

If you’ve been following along for a while, you probably already know the story behind our vintage dining set. If not- it’s worth a read! We finally found the last piece of our dining set puzzle and have been enjoying it since. Here’s how it looks today…

Setting a Simple Thanksgiving Tablescape

Setting a table for four felt so easy this year… I’m hoping to continue that mindset since Emmett & I have been sick and are continuing to recover. My goal is to streamline Thanksgiving this year. I’m taking the minimalistic route, while keeping things beautiful and delicious. I pre-ordered the majority of our meal from an amazing local bakery and will stick to a few staples I enjoy making. With lower energy this year, here’s how I assembled our quick and classic holiday tablescape…

Start with a Runner

You know I’m a big fan of Greek key decor… I scored this table runner for less than $20! After ironing out the wrinkles, it set the foundation for our table. Against our black table, the contrast felt really nice.

Layer Serveware

Next, I layered the serveware. I started with our French Pillivuyt plates, and grabbed a new set of patterned Spode plates for the occasion. Aren’t they pretty?

Next, I pulled out the glassware, flatware, and may or may not have had to run the dishwasher before proceeding. Do you ever pull out dishes you haven’t used in a while and are slightly appalled by the dust? Yeah, me too.

Add Napkins

When searching for napkins, I try to find table textiles in natural materials- like cotton or linen. These linen napkins perfectly matched my new table runner… a happy accident. Rather than using napkin rings, ties, or a bow this time around- I decided to neatly fold them, keeping things simple.

Arrange a Centerpiece & Add Candles

I had an extra strand of pine needle garland leftover from my holiday decorating, so I grabbed the wire cutters and snipped it in half to fashion a quick & easy shortened centerpiece. Don’t be afraid to trim down holiday greenery to use on the dining table! Alongside candles and ribbon, garland looks perfectly textural and understated. I didn’t end up using the entire piece, so it went to live in another room. Here’s how the table came together…

I was able to find everything I used for my tablescape, so it’s all linked above for you. I rarely set a table for four, so this was a fun creative exercise.

This year’s Thanksgiving table was inspired by my new Spode plates. I love the brown toile pattern edge detail and traditional touch they add. Aside from the plates and runner- I used items we already had here at home.

Decorating the Dining Room for the Holidays

Our dining room is basically a blank canvas to renovate someday… white walls, half of the trim has been pulled down, and it’s a shell of a space. Aside from our dining set, the only thing that exists in this open concept room is our vintage sideboard, which I style every holiday. In keeping things easy this year, I layered up some greenery, tucked in a few pinecones and dehydrated oranges, leaned a work of art, set out a favorite seasonal candle, and adorned a marble catch all with a vintage French horn. Less is more when it comes to sideboard styling sometimes!

FAQ

Do you have recommendations for affordable white dinnerware? I love yours, but they’re out of my budget.

I actually shared a blog post comparing my Pillivuyt French Dinnerware vs Budget Target Comparison plates. They’re surprisingly close, are lower priced, and the quality seems really good. Give that blog post a read for an in-depth look! I think it would be a fabulous alternative for you.

Could you please link your flatware? I love the bamboo look!

Of course. It’s actually on sale for Black Friday right now… 50% off. You can find my exact set, here!

  1. Good morning! Classic, inviting, and beautiful. Naturally! The rich neutrals and warm wood tones create a perfect backdrop for the verdant accents and pops of orange. Just gorg. The credenza styling hits just the right note! I’m loving the mixed greenery garland and brassy goodness. BTW, what are the deets on that pretty russet candle? 😍 Setting the table for an intimate crew is much simpler, though still special. Love the addition of the Spode. We’re only six this year, but I’m hoping to gather my chaos to create magic.🤣 (Witcher anyone?) Dusty glassware. A hostess’s nemesis. Ordering part of the feast, on the other hand, such a boon! Hopefully, it provides the breathing room you need to enjoy the day. Today, my tasks include ironing table linens and baking gingerbread mushrooms. Here’s wishing your agenda consists primarily of hot tea and naps.🤞💜 Take care, Sarah!

Thank you, Peggi! I can’t remember where that candle came from- it was one of the local shops last holiday season, but it smells divine. How did your magical tablescape come together yesterday? I hope everyone had an amazing time! I’m going to need a photo of the ginger bread mushrooms- so cute. You’re so creative! I snagged the John Derian mushroom plates from the Target collection last year and those would be the perfect pairing. Yesterday was definitely more relaxing than years past and our dinner was delish. I think we may take the local bakery route again next year… it was that good! Happy Friday!

  2. Good morning! I love your simple tablescape, and I’m on the same page. I’m taking a minimal approach as well. We’ll roast the turkey and make a few of the most loved, but everything else I bought from Costco to make my life easier and my energy levels last. We typically host 12-15. I’ll be setting a table for 8 this year. I love the textured layers, simple greenery, and festive colors on your table. Hopefully I can pull something together that’s equally simple and festive! I’m looking forward to enjoying our first thanksgiving in the new (not-quite-finished) dining room. I will likely have to run the dishwasher before I start as well- how can glassware get so dirty when it’s not touched?! I guess we’ll never know; at any rate, it will be lovely to enjoy this new space for our family. We’re already loving the new living room, and my entertainment center should be arriving any day! With that addition, the new space will be 85% complete. This holiday season has been even more exciting with the swap. I hope the four of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving, and I hope you and Emmett are feeling on the mend sooner than later! Happy Thanksgiving friends!

Thank you, Lauren! I hope you and yours had the happiest Thanksgiving! That’s the way to do it… simple and stress-free! Emmett grabbed an apple pie from Costco, and I’ll admit- it was amazing. 12-15 is a lot of people, so I imagine 8 felt like a walk in the park! How did everyone enjoy the dining room? I’m so glad to hear the living room is already being put to good use. We’re still feeling under the weather, but I started some new meds and herbal supplements that I’m hoping will do the trick. Fingers crossed! Have a fun weekend ahead! xo

  3. Your dining room looks so pretty Sarah! The Spode plates are a gorgeous addition and the color scheme is beautiful. So very fitting for the season. I adore how you decorated to accommodate a 4 place setting, the runner, candles and pine arrangement is lovely. Just perfect in my opinion. In recent years 4 place settings are usually my maximum as we no longer have any other family members in close proximity for dinner. It’s just usually the 4 of us. I keep it fairly simple but I try to do something different every year.
Your sideboard looks incredible too! I love the gathered and mixed greenery with pinecones and dried clementine slices ❤️ Just the right amount. Our dining room is too small for a sideboard or a pedestal but we do have a bay window which I layer with a little greenery and the vintage deers like yours. They do look so pretty perched on the bay window sill.
Ordering in sounds like a solid plan so you can both focus on recovery. I’m sure your father in law will appreciate spending quality time with you. I certainly hope each day your both a little stronger and start to feel like yourselves again soon ❤️‍🩹 take care and almost Happy Thanksgiving 🍁

Thank you so much, Colleen! We had such a lovely dinner last night- having a smaller table was really nice… especially since Emmett & I have been sick. I love your idea of layering a bay window with greenery and the vintage deer- that sounds like a stunning holiday vignette! Hope you’re having a good week :) xo

  4. I have a similar french horn and never know what to do with it. Now I have an idea!

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

So glad to hear that, Dawn! I have a handful and they’re super versatile… on the tree, around a bowl or a candle, hanging with a wreath, tucked behind the edge of artwork, etc. Happy decorating!
