Christmas Tour: Holiday Basement Bar & Media Room

Over the weekend, I wrapped up decorating our home for the holidays and began photographing each room to share with you. Per usual, I got carried away and captured far too many images. Therefore, I’m going to share a Christmas tour of each space. I’ll actually be sharing a lot more in the coming weeks, so check back daily for festive tours and fun holiday posts! We’re kicking off the seasonal tour with the lowest level of our house… the basement- which includes the media room, fireplace area, and basement bar. If you’re looking for simple and classic holiday decorating inspiration that takes minimal effort, this area encompasses exactly that!

I’ll be honest, Emmett & I have spent way too much down time here the past two weeks. I’m struggling to recover from pneumonia, and after a trip to the doctor yesterday- Emmett also has it. We’ve been in rest, recovery, and lounge mode over here, desperately trying to recuperate before our holiday company arrives. This room is our comfort space- it’s cozy, comfortable, and the ultimate zone for relaxing. Though my energy levels are running low at the moment, I did manage to style some greenery and string up some ribbon for a festive touch. Did you see last week’s post on 20 ways to decorate with ribbon this holiday season?

Basement Media Room

Let’s start with the seating area and media room side of the space. This room actually feels pretty wintery year round because of my artwork selection. Living in Utah (as a skier), I adore my vintage ski prints. Check out this post for where to find vintage ski prints & winter artwork. I decided to keep things simple with plain greenery… a few wreaths for my galleries and garland.

I tucked some real touch garland behind our soundbar on the credenza, wrapping it around the table lamps and television for a classic pop of seasonal green texture.

I kept the ribbon monochromatic, using a lighter blue shade to complement my coveted navy wall color (Naval by Sherwin-Williams) and the dyed drapery panels. I still can’t believe I got those to perfectly match.

Basement Bar

Decorating a basement bar for the holidays can be tricky. Again, my mentality was less is more. Leaning into my vintage blue & white pieces, I tied a French blue ribbon around my rosemary topiary for a festive touch. I also swapped my soap & lotion set at the sink for something seasonally appropriate- this citrus & birch duo is my new favorite… and it’s marked down for Black Friday!

I also bookmarked some of my favorite seasonal cocktails for easy access while hosting. You could even prop the recipes on an easel as functional decor. I think a bar feels festive, in general… a place to celebrate and converse. Lean into pretty vintage glassware, add a little greenery (I used another piece of the real touch garland), style some ribbon, and call it good.

Basement Fireplace

Across from the kitchen or bar, our electric fireplace has been getting a good workout. We had three inches of snow on Sunday, and that wasn’t even our first storm of the season. This thing has been the most cozy addition to the space, and I’m seriously impressed with how well it heats our basement! Not to mention… it has been the most fun to style- holiday decorations, included. Again, I tied a couple bows from the metal shade brass sconces, and kept the garland minimal and simple. I also pulled out my traditional glass hurricanes.

FAQ

Do you have any easy tips for creating a cozy holiday space, without spending a lot on decor?

Absolutely! Try to use what you already have… candles, heavier winter textiles (wool, faux fur, etc), simple greenery, books, and repurposed ribbon go a long way. These things also have longevity- meaning they work well (visually) all winter long. I try to create a cozy look we can enjoy past the holiday season- especially in these minimal areas that need warmth, like a basement.

Are you still liking your reclining sectional sofa down here?

We are! It could use a good cleaning (on my to-do list), but it’s really comfortable. Check out my Homebody reclining sectional review here for all the details!

Could you link your exact wreaths and ribbon?

Of course! My exact preserved boxwood wreaths were from the Tuesday Made shop a couple years ago, but here is a similar version (the same size & texture). This is my exact French blue velvet ribbon.

What is the countertop in your basement bar? It’s beautiful!

Thank you! It’s viola marble. You can see more of it in this post- how to choose a marble slab for your renovation. This one might also be helpful… how to select different countertop edge profiles.

  1. Good morning! Hands down, the coziest basement in the land…although I am sorry it’s seen more recovering than relaxing lately. 😭 So miserable that you’re both struggling! Despite that, you’ve managed to create beautiful, understated seasonal vibes. You’re amazing. I adore the simple but luxurious greenery to enjoy all winter. I’m definitely getting posh mountain retreat. Since the bar is likely the only place you’d find me at a ski resort 🤣, I appreciate your attention to that area. I’m also super curious about which festive cocktails you bookmarked! I’m not certain how psyched for decorating I am this year, but I always enjoy your holiday home tours regardless. So full of inspiration! Speaking of, I can’t wait to see your Thanksgiving table tomorrow. Can you believe I’m using similar brown transferware?! So pretty.😍 Today’s completely unnecessary endeavor? Crafting morel mushrooms from marzipan. Ha. Here’s wishing Casa Gibson is on the mend and back at full strength before you know it! Happy Monday, Sarah.💜

    Also, Cash gets it.😜

Good morning, Peggi! Thank you, thank you! I want to leave the greenery down here all winter- it’s so cozy. Posh mountain retreat is the best compliment! I’m actually itching to go skiing since we have snow here, but my lungs are telling me otherwise. Maybe a hot toddy (or tea) at the bar is a better idea, ha! I love a cranberry mule this time of year, espresso martini (with tequila), anything with bourbon, and Emmett has been wanting to shake up a whiskey sour. I also do mulled wine each holiday. I love that you also went with brown transferware… great minds ;) Morel mushrooms from marzipan are probably the cutest thing I’ve ever heard of. Happy Friday! xo

  2. Good morning Sarah! I’m sorry to hear Emmett is now down- it’s been a tough month for you guys and I hope he’s able to recover quickly. I’ve been down with a sinus infection the past week and a half, and almost feeling like myself again. The basement is looking classically festive. The minimal route was definitely the way to go down here, considering every space is such a workhorse. I love the blue ribbon complimenting your blue & white; it’s a subtle monochromatic touch that makes it feel a little more special. I decorated the tree over the weekend- (it’s almost done); but I also festooned a few horses with celebratory ribbon, ha! I’m so excited for the holidays this year- were it not for my flooring getting installed, the tree would have been up two weeks ago- but the wait was worth it. We’re getting set and situated for hosting this week and I’m busy making my list for Black Friday shopping. I hope you’re both able to feel back to yourselves in time for hosting!! Your sneak peeks of holiday decor are looking fantastic as always and I can’t wait to see your staircase. Rest & recuperation is on the docket as much as possible this week- here’s to Monday and increased capacity, lol.

Good morning, Lauren! We haven’t been sick is so long- I hate hearing that you caught something, too. It’s terrible this time of year. I hope you’re fully feeling back to yourself! You know I love to add ribbon to everything this time of year, ha. Did you finish your decorating last weekend? I’m also excited for the holidays this year. Once we’re all feeling well, it’s game on! I hope hosting has been a breeze and everyone is enjoying your newly updated spaces! I’m going to try to shoot our staircase today for Monday’s post. I also need to tackle Black Friday shopping today, but I’m thinking I’ll save that for sofa time this evening. Have an amazing weekend ahead! xox

  3. Good Morning!
What a lovely holiday tour of your basement Sarah! I am sad to hear Emmett had also developed pneumonia. Ugh! It’s the worst. He certainly has a beautifully decorated basement to recover from, not to mention the most comfortable sectional sofa I’ve ever seen. And the reclining feature is appreciated more than ever I’m sure. The fireplace also helps provide a comfort and coziness that will aid the healing process too.
Your basement is gorgeous but the added holiday decor does elevate and highlight all the pretty things you have. There’s nothing like a wreath, ribbon or garland to add to that wintry Christmas vibe we all crave this time of year. All the festive touches are perfection!
I look forward to seeing your dining room as I’m sure it will be elegant and spectacular 🌲🥂💝 sending big bursts of healing vibes for you both ❤️‍🩹

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Good morning, Colleen! Thank you so much. We are struggling through it, ha. What a terrible time to be sick. Despite that, we’re hoping to have a nice weekend with family in town! The basement definitely looks best during the holidays- it was fun to decorate this space now that it’s finished. I can’t wait to host and have drinks at the bar this holiday! I hope you have a good weekend ahead :)
