Christmas Tour: Decorating the Kitchen for the Holidays

The next stop on my Christmas tour is our kitchen… come on in! When holiday hosting (or otherwise), it seems everyone eventually assembles here- in the heart of our home. Per usual, I kept my holiday decorating classic and simple in this space, while considering functionality. I didn’t want to crowd our countertops or clutter an already busy workspace. Click through to see how it’s currently looking this holiday season…

It’s hard to believe we renovated our kitchen almost six years ago! Time flies, but it’s still a room I love and am proud of. I have to say, I think it’s withstanding the test of time- aesthetically and functionally speaking. Most recently, we customized a kitchen island, but this space hasn’t had much updating since the big overhaul. Prior to the island, we gave our coffee bar a kitchen shelving update– little tweaks, here and there. Here’s how it currently looks…

The Range

We’ve been using and loving our Big Chill classic range for seven months now, and there’s no turning back- it has been a total dream! To accent our range area, I temporarily switched the art, hung up a wreath, tied on a ribbon, and added a couple dehydrated orange slices… again, sticking with my citrus Christmas.

You might also notice the cordless lamp? I grabbed that from our outdoor kitchen for the winter. It has been really handy in this corner spot.

In addition, I pulled out some seasonal favorite cookbooks, which I’ll be referring to all winter long. The best news? I’m bringing our holiday cookie swap back, so keep your eyes peeled for some seriously delicious recipes from me and my fellow designers!

The Sink

At the sink, my go-to holiday trick is to swap our hand wash and lotion set for a seasonal fragrance. My Tatine set is sold out for the winter, but you have to check out this Citrus & Birch set… we have it at the basement bar, and it smells incredible. So much so, I added a set to the basement bathroom as well. On that note, be sure to check out my Christmas tour of the holiday basement bar & media room, in case you missed it!

I framed both kitchen windows with my beloved pine needle garland, adding in a citrus spray with some dehydrated orange slices. I adore the wispy, textural look it gives!

Our dish soap also got a citrus seasonal upgrade… the white grapefruit is my favorite this time of year.

The Coffee Bar

We use the coffee bar everyday- it’s a workhorse. I shared my coffee bar finds & essentials here. Many of my holiday updates are tucked away in their places… seasonal teas organized in my tea basket on the top shelf and hot cocoa stocked in the drawer below, but I did bring out a little faux cedar tree that has since been replaced with planted paper whites from the grocery (Trader Joes for the win!). I moved the tree to the sink window sill.

The coffee bar window received the same simple garland treatment. It’s festive and functional without being over the top or in the way. I like that it doesn’t hang or drape on the counter.

The Island

Since updating our island, I’ve been enjoying styling the marble surface. This month, it’s adorned with a little bit of greenery and our regular fruit bowl is filled to the brim with clementines, grapefruit, and oranges… all of which, we’ve been happily snacking on.

Asymmetric Arrangement

The last thing I wanted to show you is my asymmetric holiday arrangement, situated just outside the kitchen. It’s filled with droopy Norfolk pine, cedar sprays, orange branches, dried slices, naked branches I foraged from our yard, and undone ribbon. What do you think? It sits atop the pedestal I shared in our DIY wood pedestal makeover a few years back. I love the height it adds while making a statement in the corner. It perfectly fills the negative space. Check out this post for step-by-step instructions on how to build a decorative pedestal. It always comes in handy!

FAQ

Could you please link the faux orange branches?

Happily! These came from one of my favorite local shops, Alice Lane. They’re pretty realistic when mixed alongside other greenery.

What is your cabinet paint color?

I shared the swatches behind color matching our kitchen cabinets, along with my painting tips here! Alternatively, this post may be helpful… my top paint color picks for dark kitchen cabinets.

  1. Good morning Sarah! I love your kitchen, but especially when it’s decorated for Christmas. The pine needle garland is back- I missed it so much last year. I love how it brings a touch of whimsy to this space. The dried oranges are such a fantastic compliment to the blue cabinetry. Simple, festive, and so gorgeous in here. I do decorate my kitchen- my cabinets don’t reach the ceiling, so I display my blue and white ceramic pottery atop those cabinets year-round; for Christmas I add my elves. They are my favorite part of Christmas, and have been with me since the kitchen remodel at the old house. This year I added some candy cane trees to their little vignette, and a Santa to complete the toy shop vibes. My kitchen always is a very kitschy Christmas vibe, but I adore it. My other favorite is my vintage elf candy dish- the dish is Santa’s boots and pants, and the elf is peeking out of them- you’ve inspired me to fill it with oranges when the candy runs out. Your kitchen is so classic and beautiful, and always inspiring styling ideas. I hope you’re having a fantastic week!

Thank you, Lauren! I’m so glad I brought the pine garlands back out- they’re my favorite, too. I love hearing about your kitchen decor. I’m all about your blue & white! Your festive special touches also sound super fun (and nostalgic). Love the kitschy original Christmas vibes I’ve been seeing a lot of this year. Classic! It’s been a busy one over here. Emmett’s dad heads back home on Friday, so we’ve been packing Black Friday orders, hanging out, and knocking things off our to-do list. Hope you’re also having a good week :) xo

  2. Good morning! Has there ever been a more charmingly festive kitchen? I say no! I love the garlands swagged over the windows since counter space is precious in my home. Perhaps this will be the year I actually try it! Ha. I’m itching for details on your new art! I adore lino cuts, but I can’t quite zoom close enough. Is it from the shop? Definitely digging the citrus theme against your dark, moody cabinets. Extra points for edible decor.🤣 (That’s what Cash said…) What a relief for you to finally have a gorgeous *working* range! And I’m over here dancing with excitement for the return of the cookie swap! I was just trying to convince bestie to join me for a baking party. 🎉 Speaking of soirees, I hosted a favorite things party once. So fun! I really enjoyed hearing the stories from everyone about their pick. What an extra special treat to mingle in your beautifully holidayed home! Right down to the seasonal soaps, no nicety forgotten. Here’s a possibly strange question. How many garlands do you use for the entire house? I have what feels like a lot…until I start draping them willy nilly and realize I don’t have nearly enough.🤦🏻 I will say that your tours have finally inspired me start decorating. We are on day 3 of nothin’ but FOG, so I could use some sparkle. Cheers to all things merry and bright! Happy Wednesday, Sarah!💜

Good morning! Thank you! My art is an old find- an original from Edgar Yaeger (lucky estate sale find). It used to live in the guest bedroom at our old house, but had been hanging out downstairs these past few years. I’ve been meaning to reframe it! Cash is being SO bad with the oranges. If he could jump on the kitchen counter, he’d totally find a way to eat those. Haha! I love our range so much, and it has been working wonderfully. I’ve got make around 400 cookies next week (for Emmett’s work), so I’ve got my work cut out for me. Come on over if you’d like to join my solo baking party, ha. Oof- the garland count is high around here. I’m guessing I have around 20? Thankfully we have the storage shed to keep them in totes during the off season. I love hearing that you’re sprinkling a little decor throughout your house! I hate hearing that it has been so cold and foggy. Ick! Our air quality is gross here this week, so it looks foggy- without being actual fog. Yuck. Happy Wednesday!! xo

  3. I never tire of seeing your stunning kitchen and it’s so spectacular adorned for Christmas. Of course, the orange theme works perfectly here and a yummy bowl of citrus on your gorgeous island is making my appetite seriously crave some vitamin C. Which we all need to double up this time of year. The artwork with wreath and ribbons look amazing by your gorgeous stove, so very pretty 😍 I must ask how you hung the artwork on your tile? The art looks like a substantial piece I’m amazed and curious how you hung it.
I’m not surprised your guests want to hang out here, it’s so beautiful 😍 a dream kitchen for sure. The garland on the windows are stunning and the little citrusy canvas on the shelving in the coffee bar is so sweet. Everything is just beyond beautiful Sarah🌲❤️✨
I’m moving along slowly with decorating but hoping to wrap up most of it today. I completed the exterior, foyer, powder and sitting room and am happy with how they evolved. I’m kind of winging it and it’s turning out pretty good but it’s taking me longer to finish. Anyway your home is always an inspiration and you really motivate me to kick it up a notch Sarah, thank you! Have a wonderful day and enjoy cooking in your incredibly festive kitchen ❤️

    1. Sarah Gibson says:

Thank you, Colleen! Very good point! Having been so sick, I’m really trying to get a lot of vitamin C this month. I actually drilled into the tile (twice), so we have two little finishing nails there used to hang artwork. It sounds like you’re making amazing progress with your own decor- the exterior, foyer, power and sitting room? That’s four big tasks checked off your list. Keep it up! Hope you’re having a good week! xo
